5. Tell us about it in a limerick
Limericks aren't subject to NDAs.

True fact: look it up.

10. Come on--it's easy!
Like this:

Though I can't reveal any specifics,
I can tell you my job is terrific.
But that's all I can say
Or they'll drag me away,
And you'll find me, drowned in the Pacific.

11. Or this
But one guy, who now is much older,
Once disclosed what he'd read in a folder.
And he very soon learned
Of the NDA's terms
When they cut off his hands at the shoulder.

12. Or even this
I accept that my job in research has
Secret rules like a cult or a church has,
But I think I'd prefer
If, from now on, there were
Not as many full cavity searches.

Be a sport--spill the beans!

19. Here's the problem with using NDAs:
Our company accounts have been sheeted,
But the ethics are clearly quite fetid.
For example, jasonc,
Who's our latest employee,
<I'm afraid the last line's been deleted.>

13. Just think in a true free-market economy
there'd be no such things, along with a lot of other protections for business.

14. True--and it's a shame that we live in a state of corporate socialism
Nice that capitilism is deemed a-ok for the rest of us though, right?

15. Heres a question for you
Edited on Thu Nov-01-07 09:29 AM by jasonc
What incentive would there be for business to innovate, research and develop new technologies etc.. if there was going to be no protection for them? Do you think they would invest millions of dollars in something only to have it taken away by someone that did nothing to get it except wait for you to finish it, then stole it?

Lets face it, right now we have a free-er market than we have had in a while. These things are necessary. For an example of what happens to an economy when there is no incentive to innovate or succeed, look at the former Soviet Union, or North Korean economies. yeah, theres a good model to emulate.

I am all for capitalism and free markets, it gives me things like an iPod, continually faster Mac laptop computers, more efficient cars, etc.. Try as you might, you can not will society to be more altruistic, there has to be a reason, or incentive, to strive for while inventing these new technologies. Things like NDAs and Non Compete contracts, etc.. all serve a purpose and that is to help maintain a fair competitive market place, for big and small companies alike.

This is similar to why we pay taxes, at least theoretically, it is called the Free Rider Problem in economics, basically it says this:

Copied from Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_rider_problem

"There is a street on which 25 people live. There is a chance to install a street-wide litter collection system to reduce unseemly garbage, the cost of which is $2,500. Each person may, independently, be prepared (i.e., able and willing) to pay $100 or more for the benefit of a cleaner street.

If the system is installed everyone will benefit. However, it is possible that some people on the street will refuse to pay, anticipating that the system will be installed in any event.

Despite the fact they may be prepared to contribute $100, they will claim that they are not prepared to pay, and instead hope that others in the street will pay for the system anyway, and they receive the benefit for no personal expense.

The result is that it is possible no system will be installed, an example of Market Failure. This is despite the fact that allocative efficiency would be improved."

17. I agree with you.
I should've used the :sarcasm: smilie with that reply. I was trying to show how wrong the free market wackos really are when they bitch and moan about regulations. They don't understand the full impact of what they're talking about.
