Meat and protein questions for Atkins dieters
I haven't gotten around to buying the Atkins diet book and I was reading on another post that spam was on the diet. Is this true or has someone lost the meaning of diet?

1. That wasn't the same type of spam
it was a different spam, I don't know where the meat gets classified in the Atkins diet though.

Processed pork doesn't seem like it should be on a diet but I guess some cultures eat it and others don't. I know that they eat tons of Spam in Hawaii and they even have restaurants dedicated to spam.

2. This diet makes people cranky and mean don't go on it
Eat less carbs, only whole grains, lots of vegies, raw foods and little meat. Nuts and fruit.

6. spam (pork shoulders and ham) is on the atkins diet
high protein, low carbs, what's the problem?

it's a scary diet. eat really rich food and still lose weight.

it works by forcing your body to do some not-normal things because you're depriving it of carbs.

if it sounds like a bad idea, it's because it probably is. but it does seem to work, and aside from some cases of gout, there doesn't seem to be too many problems. then again, maybe the kidney damage won't show up right away.

9. What is the ratio of meat content in spam?
35% meat and 65% by products? It's a scary can of crap and anyone that would recommend that you eat it on a diet is full of BS.

13. "Not-normal things"? It forces your metabolism into ketosis, which is a
process that is brought about by not giving your body as many easy-to-burn sugars and carbs, but feeding it harder-to-burn protein and fat. Your body, not recieving enough carbs to burn, switches to a fat-burning metabolism (including the fat stored in your body). Burning fat is also more difficult than burning carbs, so there's a higher caloric burn rate.

This is NOT an extreme diet. It is very important that you do eat some carbs, even in the induction phase and on maintenance you have plenty of opportunity to gorge yourself on vegetables if you so choose (though some, such as potatoes, are still verboten).

Lowering cholesterol and losing weight while eating foods high in fat mas seem strange, but if you train your body to burn fat as its primary fuel, the results can be impressive. I lost 30 pounds and my cholesterol went from 210 to 189 (with a huge positive swing in the good cholesterol/bad cholesterol ratio) in 12 or 13 weeks. Even my doctor was impressed.

No diet is for everybody, but Atkins isn't "unnatural" and it's not unhealthy if done correctly.

7. I think spam would be on the diet
and I have personally watched two people lose mucho weight on the diet.

Seriously, it really works.

And there is something to be said about our addiction to carbs...even though I'm not on the diet I've cut down on carbs, and feel better for it....

I used to like have a bowl of ceral for breakfast, some fruits and a sandwich with fries for lunch, pasta for dinner, and be like - oh I've eaten healthy I can have some ice cream for desert - way to many carbs...it was insane..

I am blessed with a fast metabolism, but still it was an insane amount of carbs when I sat down and tabulated it..

11. Are you attached to SPAM?
for some reason? I personally don't like it.

For Atkins purposes I would be concerned about the fat:protein ratio. IOW, if it's mostly fat, you're missing the protein. Also doesn't SPAM have a lot of nitrates or nitrites?

If the answer to both of those things is "no", then have at it.

I've been eating Atkins-style for the past year and 1/2. I've dropped 33 lbs and feel terrific holding at my maintenance weight.

12. Someone keeps telling me it's on Atkins diet
I am in a mood tonight and yes I loved spam when I was a kid. My mom use to fry it and put in on white bread with mustard or miracle whip.

I am getting hungry now.
