Wish I could just sleep until spring games start. :(

1. Now comes the free agent signings/trades...
:)

MLK weekend is the Cardinals' Winter Warm-Up, which is always nice in the middle of a cold, miserable winter. Then, about a month after that is spring training. If my calculations are correct, they'll be playing their first exhibition games juuuust about the time my Blues start tanking it in March.

Not so very long at all, if you think about the time until spring training. January and February suck, as they always do, but at the end of it, you get baseball. :D

3. I don't sit around the hot stove
I'll check out some of the deals made at the winter meetings, and you can bet I'll be keeping tabs on the Dodgers and A-Clod (they'd better. fucking. NOT!), but other than that I just wanna hibernate until about March 5. :(

5. A-Rod? Oh, man, you poor thing.
I haven't been keeping up with baseball since hockey season started.

I feel for you. :(

11. They'll be sniffing around him
They've got a big hole at third (as usual), since Garciaparra's hamstring moved him to first, where he ran into a cluster fuck with James Loney, the Dodgers' first baseman of the future — unless his feud with Jeff Kent ends up in a trade. (I'd prefer that Kent retire.) Andy LaRoche could be their third baseman, but he's gotta hit better than .226, though he did have a .365 OBP last year.

I don't think I could pull for a ball club that has A-Clod, even after 43 years.

24. Well, I'm not sure, I might...
Go to the alibris site, and search "baseball" under title, and under subject, you get some different ones...

8. For you.
From A Great and Glorious Game: Baseball Writings of A. Bartlett Giamatti
by A. Bartlett Giamatti, et al
"The Green Fields of the Mind "

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, October 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped, and summer was gone.

23. OMG, yes.
I had the great, great fortune to meet him at Texas A&M (there to give a speech) my freshman year in '83. I knew him then as a Renaissance scholar, and only later knew of and appreciated his connection to and love for baseball. What a great, great man.

30. Well, he's a damned good manager
And I don't think of him as a Jankee, but as a Brave; he was with Milwaukee/Atlanta when I was a kid.

But I don't think Little's the problem. We need a solid third baseman, another guy in the rotation who can win at least 12 games and a power-hitting outfielder.
