I *so* need a new job
Going back to work, within an hour it was just like I'd never left. The shit that I had left behind was all waiting for me, because no-one else would touch it. You see, the developers are divided into three teams, and my team is unequivocally the least important. No-one cares what we do, and everything else is higher priority. So my work was left pretty much as I left it, except that it had gone slightly mouldy in my absence.

Apart from one thing, one huge monster program I had worked on, which I got criticised about at lunch time by my Brummie coworker who thinks he's le merde (without justification. He keeps on talking about being underpaid and leaving for that £40K job but just never seems to go anywhere. You know the type). He couldn't understand why it was so big and complicated (because the problem was big and complicated, dumbass) and he feels strong enough to sit there and tell me how I should have done it even though he hasn't given the actual problem a cursory glance.

And the DBAs managed to wipe out one of my database changes in development for the second freaking time after a database copy ten days ago. I so miss working with competent people. All you need to get a job where I work is to be a horse racing fan. They advertise programming jobs in the Racing Post and Horse And Hound.

So how was your day? :D

2. My day was OK.
I've been lucky, I work at a university here in Maryland (I've been here for about 14 years) and I have a great boss, and great coworkers.

It's not the most interesting job in the world, but it provides a nice, steady income, and with two young children (my son is 10, and my daughter is 8) that's really important. The biggest perk is that my kids will be able to attend college for free if the go to school here (and they will get a discount if they attend any other university in the Maryland state system).

I'm sorry to hear about your job - my wife is in a similar situation where she works...no matter when we go on vacation, nothing gets done until she gets back.

Anyway, here's hoping that your tomorrow will be better.

Tim

than it was earlier today.

To hell with that coworker. You should be the one moving on to the better paying job somewhere else. :(

ever-so-slightly better than that. But my observation is, wherever you go, whatever you do for a living, every workplace has at least one unrepentant asshole for every 10 employees.

9. Ya know, I actually understood all of that.
Because I'm married to a geek myself, and I tell you, there HAS to be a better place for you. Could there be work available for coding/database work in the banking industry? I can't imagine that you can't find work elsewhere in Britain.

PS: If you work in the states you'd make, even when adjusted for currency, at least 50% more than you'd earn there :)

 to you.

Chronic lack of ambition is my problem. ;)

27. Well ya know, you have that option!
Heck - you've done more than I would ever do - you packed your bags and visited another nation for more than a week. And I consider myself a rather ambitious (and adventurous) person.

I think you do have it in you - you just need to feel like it's okay to separate from the routine. And it is okay - I promise.

I should tell you about my move from Texas to New York City sometime... (wink-wink, nudge-nudge)

You write the software and I write the manual, onscreen helps.

We just want ONE little thing changed, why should it take so long?

That shouldn't be hard, should it?"

Oh no, I'll just have to pick apart every fucking bit of the program to do it. ;)

36. Hell yeah - one time my mgr wanted
a drop down list of all possible tape slots for people to choose from - 32,000 of them, to pulled from a 3rd party DB which we did not have any diagrams and little info on.

I told her it was insane, no one will scroll through a box that big, and it would take a lot of research to even figure out HOW to get that info (as it was all dependent on user, location, security level, etc and so on).

After I finally got all the info to do it she saw how silly it was on the next call and decided to go with my earlier suggestions (and then, a few weeks later changed her mind again and wanted something different).

A program I was able to rewrite from scratch in a weekend (when they got their heads out their asses) took 7 months to write, and I was laid off and it is still not finished.

And they laid me off because I wasn't doing anything....I got all they wanted done, waited on more - sometimes for weeks, and she was always too busy traveling to give me more work. Then she would change program requirements and bitch that the program was not in production (hello, it was working fine the way you wanted it more than once!!!).

Now they are cutting more people and an old friend was assigned the project and is totally lost (and I had to build the DB for it, all queries, write all code, etc and so on).

ARRRRGH!
