Today I have to put my best friend to sleep
Misty has been sick for weeks now. The vet had her on a regimen of pills and high protein. It didn't help. We came home the other day to find her laying in the kitchen, unable to get up on her own. She refused food. She could barely walk and even then you had to help her up. I put her in the bedroom on a comforter last night so she'd be near us.

About 1 in the morning she started crying. I lay down on the floor and just held her and stroked her until she calmed down. Now she's breathing heavy but her eyes are glassy.

I know it's time. I've never had to do this before and it hurts so bad. She's been a major part of my life for 15 years and saying goodbye is killing me. I realize that when we mourn we generally do it for ourselves but I can't help but be selfish because I don't want her to leave me.

But I understand it's not for me. It's for her. And that, hopefully, will make it better.

This sounds like exactly what happened with our Simba in July. I assure you you will be doing the most merciful, humane thing for Misty. Unfortunately it will devastate you for some time. Just know that she will be out of pain and at peace and frolicking happily, waiting for you to join her someday.

11. The Heaven of Animals
Edited on Mon Oct-29-07 06:45 AM by Perry Logan
The Heaven of Animals

Here they are. The soft eyes open.
If they have lived in a wood
It is a wood.
If they have lived on plains
It is grass rolling
Under their feet forever.

Having no souls, they have come,
Anyway, beyond their knowing.
Their instincts wholly bloom
And they rise.
The soft eyes open.

To match them, the landscape flowers,
Outdoing, desperately
Outdoing what is required:
The richest wood,
The deepest field.

For some of these,
It could not be the place
It is, without blood.
These hunt, as they have done,
But with claws and teeth grown perfect,

More deadly than they can believe.
They stalk more silently,
And crouch on the limbs of trees,
And their descent
Upon the bright backs of their prey

May take years
In a sovereign floating of joy.
And those that are hunted
Know this as their life,
Their reward: to walk

Under such trees in full knowledge
Of what is in glory above them,
And to feel no fear,
But acceptance, compliance.
Fulfilling themselves without pain

At the cycle’s center,
They tremble, they walk
Under the tree,
They fall, they are torn,
They rise, they walk again.

That's the ONLY shitty part of having pets.. We outlive them, and their lives are painfully short, when you consider that we always carry them in our hearts..

Our 30 yr old son still tears up when his beloved Blanca is mentioned.. he still has her collar hanging on a peg in his kitchen..she died 12 years ago.

:hug"

Hang in there and take comfort in the knowledge that her life was good because you loved her..

I had to put my own Misty to sleep earlier this year. It was the hardest thing I'd ever done, but there comes a point when we can't ask them to fight anymore. She was too good of a girl to ask that of her.

My deepest condolences...

It was a very hard thing you did today, but the most loving final gesture you could possibly make...

As you said, it's for her. It will ultimately make it better for you...

I hope this little poem will help:

I explained to St. Peter,

I'd rather stay here,

Outside the Pearly Gate.

I won't be a nuisance,

I won't even bark,

I'll be very patient and wait.

I'll be here, chewing on a celestial bone,

No matter how long you may be.

I'd miss you so much, if I went in alone,

It wouldn't be heaven for me.
