What are the last 3 albums you bought?
Mine:

Katy Rose - Because I Can (she is a very promising artist with a more garage rock/symphonic/light alternative style than her peers. She doesn't have a great voice, but her voice is adequate and she can make it fit the mood of each song. Here's how Katy's album fares compared to some other pop/rock albums by females: )

Michelle Branch - Hotel Paper: A
Michelle Branch - Spirit Room: A
M2M - Big Room: A-
Avril Lavigne - Let Go: A-
Pink - Try This: A-
Katy Rose - Because I Can: A-
Fefe Dobson - self-titled: A-
Lucy Woodward - While You Can: B+
Pink - Missundazstood: B+
Mandy Moore - self-titled: B+
Stella Soleil - Dirty Little Secret: B+
Lillix - Falling Uphill: B+ (extra points because they often play their own guitar)
Angela Ammons - self-titled: B
M2M - Shades Of Purple: B
Rachel Farris - Soak: B-
Hoku - self-titled: B-
Nikki Cleary - self-titled: B-
Pink - Can't Take Me Home: B-
Britney Spears - In The Zone: B-
Mandy Moore - Coverage: C+
All of Britney Spears's others: C for first, C+ for next two
Hilary Duff - Metamorphosis: C-
Jennifer Love Hewitt - Barenaked: C-
B*Witched - Awake And Breathe: C-
Mandy Moore - So Real: D
t.A.T.u. - 200 Km/H in the Wrong Lane: D

Good Charlotte - The Young And The Hopeless (I used to write them off as Green Day/Blink 182 ripoffs, but they have good hooks and a little more of an 80s rock sound than the other two.)

Mindy Smith - One Moment More (Wonderful! Pure voice, non-cliched lyrics, and sparkling backgrounds. She does "Hard To Know" so well that I'd like her to include a couple more faster songs on her next album.)

40. How did you like New Favorite?
I'd give it about a C using the original posters scale. I didn't think it measured up to most of her earlier albums. I did like Allison Krause and Union Station "Live" a lot though.

6. splurged and bought 2
Rodney Crowell - Fates right hand - got me playing it loud! writing a production is great. makes me wanna check out 'Houston Kid'

and his ex-wife Roseanne Cash - Rules of Travel - so-so; production is a little muddy, writing uneven. a good duet with her dad.

8. Personally, I love Rules Of Travel
Edited on Sun Feb-01-04 04:55 PM by mvd
The Wheel is still better, but not much better IMO. I feel the production on Rules Of Travel is nicely alt-countryish rather than muddy, and her lyrics are bolstered by some songs she's had for a while.

12. Way too indie for my own good.
No, screw that, indie rock kicks ass.

U.S. Maple - "Purple On Time"
The Spits - s/t
Oneida - "Each One Teach One"

That Spits record I maybe should have waited to find used - it's so much more Ramones-y than their singles, and I've already got plenty of Ramones albums, so no need for an homage band, thanks. The U.S. Maple and Oneida are pretty damn swell, though.

I also just got the new Mountain Goats single, which I'd love to gush about 'cuz it's a-fucking-may-fucking-zing, but you asked for albums.

They played one of the last shows a local art space around here held before it closed. Their set was one of the weirdest things I've ever seen.

I fucking LOVED it.

...check out "Songs from the Mountain" by Dirk Powell, Tim O'Brien and John Herrmann. It is old timey music inspired by the book. For a while it was sold as a "companion CD" packaged together with the book, but you can buy it separately.

quebec - Ween(2003): A- Still growing on me. Ween tends to do that. Gener and Deaner do it again with a consistently solid album. Missed them on tour, maybe this summer.

Streetcore - Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros(2003): B+ Recorded part posthumously. They threw on some left-over tracks to fill out album. Feels thrown together. Not real partial to Joe's "Redemption Song".

Global A Go-Go - Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros(2001): A I feel this is the strongest of the Mescaleros three Hellcat record releases. Good world-beat feel but still has "Clash" edginess. Just edges out "Rock Art and the X-Ray Style".

46. Lucinda Williams, Regina Carter and Sarah Brightman
All new cds.
Lucinda Williams-"World Without Tears" is a really great album. It rocks. The title song is visionary.

Regina Carter-"Paganini...After a Dream". Regina is a Detroit-raised jazz violinist. This recording was made in Italy, where she travelled to record/perform jazz on the Guanari del Gesu violin that belonged to Paganini and is the property of the city of Milan. The sound of this 400 year old instrument is amazing, as is the ability of the artist.

Sarah Brightman-"Harem". She's into the middle east, this time. It's sort of a musical tribute to "Arabian Nights", with some odd touches like "What a Wonderful World". It's her typical pop/classic mix, if you like that kind of thing.

52. Deacon John's "Jump Blues"
Edited on Wed Feb-04-04 04:18 PM by GumboYaYa
DJ is a throwback to the days when rock n' roll was invented. This album is a tribute to all the great jump blues that came out of Massimo's studio on Frenchmen in New Orleans. Some people argue that Rock n' roll was invented in that little studio. If you like jump blues or are a student of the history of rock n' roll this is a must buy CD.

"Mystery Street" by Johnny Vidacovich. JV is a drummer's drummer and this CD is in he tradition of great backbeat that marks JV's career.

James Booker Live - 2 CD set. James Booker is only the greatest rock n' roll pianist ever to live and I mean that. When he sat down at the piano it was like Ray Charles and Chopin sat down together and started playing at the same time. I defy any piano player to listen to JB and try to recreate the fingering he uses. It is not possible without years of work. This CD is a great compilation of some of Booker's live performances and is a must have for the boogie woogie piano fan.
