Last evening, I went to an event sponsored by Speak Out Connecticut (www.speakoutct.org). It was an evening of stand-up political satire featuring Citizen Reno, the Yesmen, and Barry Crimmins.
The many highlights included: Reno's disgusted take on organized religion, in which she referred to John Ashcroft as a "sexually retarded neo-Nazi."
The Yesmen relating their experiences in impersonating WTO executives and actually being invited as keynote speakers to WTO-related conferences in countries like Austria, Finland, and Malaysia. (For the hilarious details, see their website, www.theyesmen.org).
Barry Crimmins talking about his high school reunion in upstate New York, whose town name he said translates to "Beautiful Lake Surrounded by Fascists." Per Crimmins, a number of his former classmates demanded to know why he kept appearing at AIDS benefits. "You're not queer, are ya?" they asked him. To which Crimmins replied, "I'm whatever threatens you."
Thankfully, the event was well-attended, to a point at which some audience members couldn't find seats and ended up sitting and standing on the sidelines. So I think it's safe to assume to Speak Out Connecticut will be sponsoring more events like this in the weeks and months to come! :bounce:
