Please send your positive thoughts, prayers, etc.
My cousin is 19 weeks pregnant with twin girls (Riley and Adeline). Her water broke yesterday. The doctors say the good thing is that there is still a good amount of amniotic fluid left. She's very scared and I'm sure you can imagine all the other emotions she is feeling. I won't tell her this, but as I was googling pre-term, premature rupture of membranes yesterday, I didn't even see percentages of live deliveries until 24 weeks and then it was around 36%. As I'm sure you know, even if she gets to 24 weeks, there are a host of potential problems for the babies. She is in the hospital, on bed rest and on antibiotics to prevent infection. Please send her some positive energy.

Thank you!

I just spoke to her. The Doctor came in this morning and gave her the bad statistics. The main concern now is preventing infection. The good news is that she recognized that her water broke immediately and was at the hospital within a couple of hours and they administered antibiotics.

The other good news is that her amniotic fluids still look good and she is not dialated and is not contracting.

13. Thank you Peggy.
At this point, her membrane has been ruptured for about 26 hours. The doctor did not give her very promising statistics and will not administer steroids until they are at 24 weeks (4+ weeks away). He has given her the option to go home and be on bed rest or stay at the hospital. He said the main concern now was preventing infection and the bugs at the hospital are worse, so it is a toss up as to where she would be better off.

She is planning to stay through the weekend.

17. she is.
she had preterm labor with her son around 30 wks, went on bed rest and steroids to help his lung develop, and delivered at 36. But we never imagined she would have complications this early. I guess we should have since it is twins.

16. Oh, man.
What do they do in these cases? I confess I'm ignorant. Can they replace amniotic fluid with some sort of synthetic? How do they know if the babies are getting enough...whatever, food, oxygen?

18. I'm not 100% sure
but, i think there is a procedure to replace amniotic fluid, but in cases other than this - where the sac just never had enough. If it is leaking, I don't think there is anything they can do, but hope she is in the 10% that heal itself.

They measure the amniotic fluid level through ultrasound and since it is still at a good level, they are not worried about the umbilical cords being compressed and cutting off food or oxygen. So that's a good thing.

25. Well they see this all the time...
and they see all the outcomes, good and bad... but with bed rest and meditation (to reduce the inevitable stress of the situation), she will hopefully stay where she's at now for another five to (god willing 11 or so) weeks, and if so, then she's gold.

The important thing is not to think too much about it... that's why meditation is so good... you're not thinking of anything good or bad, just breathing and relaxing.

I hope things work out for the best...
