Bosox Crush Underdog Rockies in Game 1
Wow. The Red Sox put on a clinic tonight, crushing the upstart Rockies under their giant heels like pesky bugs. One almost got the feeling that they stopped scoring midgame out of some respect, like all those lessons in the Mercy Rule learned in little league worked as an ethic tonight. Until that point, they just kicked sand in the face of the puny Rockies until the whole beach laughed. Stomped 'em, as predicted. In any case, the oddsmakers in Vegas are probably nodding, as the game went just as expected: the deep underdog Rockies destroyed by the best pitcher in baseball from the team with the best record and second highest payroll in baseball.

A bruising, dominant victory for the favored Bosox.

2. Probably
But this is the most overmatched of the possible overmatches. If the AL was generally better than the NL, and the Bosox were the best in the AL, then this is the most severe overmatching that could have been, except maybe Bosox-Cubbies, since the Cubbies had the worst record of the NL playoff teams.

3. I agree, but the team with the best record in the NL scored fewer runs...
than their opponents this season. That is a weak league.

4. No question about it
The Red Sox are very heavily favored for a reason. They were the best team in the AL, and therefore in all of baseball. They have the second highest payroll in baseball (after the Yankees), the best pitcher, and - I would argue, the best line-up. The NL was shite. The Red Sox are just HUGE this year. The 13-1 score is a manifestation of just how much better the Red Sox are than the Rockies.

15. this is a classic matchup, offense vs. defense
the only twist is that pitching isn't with the defense.

you basically have three variables, right? offense, defense and pitching. if you dominate in two of the three, you are going to win. The Sox are better hitters, and better pitchers. positional defense is nice, but phew.

of course, how will a guy like Dice-K react to the thin air? that's an interesting question.

5. The Rockies will probably win tomorrow.
Curt usually struggles early in any series he plays for Boston, and the Rockies'll be pissed.

Still, this one hurt. They went through five pitchers. The Sox? Beckett, Timlin and Gagne. The iron of the 'pen gets another day's rest.

No room for gloating, tho. The Rox'll come to play tomorrow.

7. I better go outside and see if the moon is still in the
sky because I could have sworn I just read William Pitt say there's "no room for gloating."

Will, you better take your temperature. You must be delirious.

No room for gloating?! :wow:

8. We haven't won anything yet.
We blew out the Tribe in game 1 of the ALCS...and it wound up going 7 games.

Lotta road left.

10. Yes Will, but since when do you allow common sense
and caution to get in the way of your gloating?

I hope you don't think I'm being a dick.

hahahahaha

11. Water is wet, sky is up, we're all gonna die someday...
...and you're a dick. Axioms all. ;)

I always bring caution and common sense into my gloating.

i.e. I don't gloat before the trophy is in hand.

Bad mojo otherwise. :)

20. True enough. You don't win the Series with the first game. . .
you win it with the last game.

:-)

12. The massively favored Red Sox will likely sweep
This is really Goliath against David, the $143 million superstar behemoth against a gritty but ultimately flawed underdog. The Rockies didn't bring their sling to Boston.

16. Over Confidence in Boston is reserved for the young
I doubt anyone over 30 isn't just waiting for the other boot to drop...

What people don't understand is that in Boston, we don't EXPECT to win the series. Hell we are happy to get there. What we do EXPECT is that something horrible will happen in the 7th inning of the 7th game and we will be left to cry in our beer.

Unless you are from here. You just don't know.

Abolish the Designated hitter rule.

Make the AL play real baseball for a change.

9. Wait until we have to have our pitchers bat.
Yes, the DH rule is a big deal. In this particular case, though, it doesn't look like there's a big conflict--Ortiz is injured. He can't field, he can't run for shit. Yes, he hits, but for right now, Papi can't do much else. I think the DH is out henceforth. He's got to be out.

To me, that's not the biggest issue for the AL. Wait until we have to have our pitchers in the batting rotation. Cripes. THAT is where the NL can destroy the AL. That is where the Sox are going to face their demons.

Yeesh. I'm picturing Schilling in the order and shuddering.

17. He wasn't hitting that great in the ALCS anyway.
Not to say that the loss of Papi doesn't hurt, but it's not gonna really kill us, the way it would if Mike Lowell and Youk and the kid weren't hitting the way they are.

As Will said, it's only game 1. Lots of ground to cover ahead of us.

GO SOX!!!!!

19. The one thing working in our favor is that you can only lose one game at a time.
:P

I think it's cool we even just won the NCLS, let alone actually having a shot at winning the World Series. I'm grateful, and even if we lose this year, I'm still going to be a proud Rockies fan.
