The message adds, solicitously, that this information is being passed along "in fairness to you."
The catch: You've got to fork over $19.97 to see any gossip that may have been collected about you.

The fee entitled Mr. Falk to correspond anonymously via e-mail with the people who were said to be researching him. After there was no reply to his inquiries, he said he demanded a refund from WordofMouth. The answer: Sorry, no refund.

The New York State Consumer Protection Board last year listed WordofMouth as one of the "Top 10 Internet Headaches & Scams." The company, registered in the Philippines, did not respond to requests for comment.
