1. I am
I've been on the diet for about three weeks. I've lost nine pounds and I have 15 pounds to go. I'm terrible at exercising, but that's my next goal to start working out in earnest.

2. anyone like urea crystals in their joints?
i heard atkins diet is getting blamed for a resurgence of gout. the acidoketosis it deliberately promotes overloads the kidneys and unprocessed urea crystalizes and settles in the joints, most noticeably (at first) in the big toe due to gravity and low circulation.

very painful. manageable but incurable.

sorry no link. i heard a few news articles about a month ago but little more. atkins is the latest fad but there seems much more of a widespread commercial push behind this one than previous fad diets.

my 2 cents, any diet that cuts out or deliberately provides insufficient quantities of any basic food group is dangerous. just because we haven't yet fully identified the dangers doesn't mean it's safe.

disclaimer: i'm not a nutritionist, your mileage may vary.

5. amusing how those that know nothing about the diet or
have actually done it are always so quick to jump in and espouse unfounded blather about it.

7. Why is everyone thinking it's a zero carb diet?
People are led around by their fucking ass hairs sometimes.

10. This is why I won't answer these "questions" and polls
People who know nothing about it are ever so ready to jump in and criticize.

When you start treating people with more respect, there will be more honest sharing here.

20. Gout sucks, but it's easily remedied with cherry juice
Seriously.... cherry juice apparently dissolves the crystalized uric acid and moves it out of the joints. ironically enough, I had my battle with this before I went to Atkins, though I had begun cutting carbs voluntarily, due to falling asleep at work after lunch, which can be pretty damned embarrassing.

As for protecting the kidney functions on a low carb diet, that's easy enough. Just drink more water.

8. I was on it for 12 weeks last year and lost 30 pounds.
Over the summer/fall, I went back to eating garbage (pizza, chips, pop, TOO much of this bread a local Italian bakery makes, etc) and gained back 25 pounds over about 9 months. I've been back on atkins for 4 weeks and have dropped about 13 pounds.

I found that when I was just in maintenance, a pasta dinner a week worked fine...no weight gain. You don't have to be incredibly strict, but it stands to reason that if you resume your old eating habits, you'll gain the weight back.

Oh, all of this with no exercise (I know myself and I don't exercise).

13. due to a medical condition i do a "caveman" type of diet...
no starch.

I eat meat, fish, and poultry, as well as dairy products(that don't contain starch, or modified food starch).
I also eat fruit(xcept bananas and avocado) and vegetables(xcept cauliflower and potatoes), and as much as possible, I try to eat the vegetables raw.
I eat no baked goods(bread, cake, cookies, etc...) or pasta, and very little rice. basically, if it has flour in it, I don't eat it.

when I started the diet, I was at 260lbs. on my 6'3" frame. It was summer, and in less than 3 months, I was under 220...I leveled off at about 218.

I've had absolutely no nutrition-related problems in the 3-4 years I've been eating this way.

and when you think about it- our bodies are not meant to eat baked goods and the like- we are hunter/gatherers by nature, and it's the diet our bodies were evolved/"designed" for.

17. I lost 40 pounds in 3 months
To celebrate, I was taking my family to an art exhibit. We stopped at Cracker Barrel for breakfast on the way, and I had the pecan waffles. I passed out and wound up with 3 days in the hospital.

so have fun, but don't come off it too fast.

19. Was doing great on it, but I got off track
After the holidays are "officially" over after tomorrow (Super Bowl Sunday, of course), it's back on. No more beer and pizza for a while.

Ask me again in a few months.

22. diet
You can definitely lose weight on it. Many I have talked to indicate is difficult to stay on long term because of the variety available. A concern if you are going strictly on meats/fats with little vegetables or fruits is that you reduce the variety and essential nutrients these foods provide. There is a lot that is not known about the long term effects on the heart, kidneys and liver but there are concerns that others have pointed out.

Research that has been done with individuals that have shown to lose weight and keep it off (5 years or more) doesn't support eliminating carbohydrates and actually points to a low calorie/fat diet with nutrient rich carbohydrates (whole grains), fruits and vegtables. The other factor is regular exercise in addition to activity throughout. Ethnic diets high in carbohydrate that have large amounts of pasta/rice, such as diets eaten in Mediterranean and Asian regions have shown to be healthy and not lead to obesity. Of course it comes down to watching portions and not pilling huge plates of pasta and rice. The villain with carbohydrates is the empty calories from refined flours and sugars: pizza, white bread, candies, soft drinks, cookies and baked goods, etc.

An important thing is to avoid a dieting pattern of repeatedly losing and gaining weight. That can be more unhealthy then being overweight.
