Is it normal to be disgusted by the sound of other people chewing?
or is this just part of my whole history of eating disorder? I'm noticing this a lot now that I have roommates that the sound of them eating crunch foods is revolting and I almost have to leave the room because I can't stand it.

1. You're not alone.
The sound of people smacking their food, especially with their mouth open, makes my gag reflex start to react.

I usually end up asking them if it tastes good because it sounds disgusting.

:hi:

3. It does draw my attention, and not in the best way...
but I actively fight being put off by it. I don't know why it seems so irksome. That only goes for polite chewing (with your lips closed).

If someone's chewing with their mouth open, that's just rude and unquestionably gross.

5. thank you
I'm glad to know I'm not so strange.
My husband does this sometimes, a little for drama I think. He gets it from his family though, they're very Big On Food, like food is the center and the reason for every get together, and when we sit down to eat everyone starts making yummy chewing noises, "mm mmm mm smack smack mmmm"
Thanksgiving is what they live for, the Great Consuming, I can't wait :eyes:

Reasonable chewing doesn't gross me out though.. people keeping their mouths closed, not trying to share their fabulous eating experience with everyone nearby.

Not a big fan of the sound of people chewing, either, but it doesn't bother me quite as much.

In part for that reason.

I hate the way it sounds. I hate the way it looks. For certain flavors I hate the way it smells. I hate that it is a substance made for chewing but not digesting. I just find it disgusting.

22. I guess it depends.....
I mean, if you're sitting relatively close to someone eating Doritos, or something like that- you're probably going to hear it regardless of their manners. Perhaps it's just a sound that somehow strikes an ill chord with you. I don't think it makes you abnormal or anything, though- it's just a quirk...

On the other hand, if they eat like pigs (i.e. mouth-open chewing, etc...) then yeah- that's not something I care to see or hear, either.

Clacking the teeth with a spoon isn't high on my list of pleasant things, either. x(

on edit: Just remembered that on my only trip to Japan I had to run out of a restaurant because everybody else was sluuuuuurping their broth/noodles. It's totally customary there, but I couldn't handle it.

I have the same issues, so believe me, I'm not laughing at you. My mother used to drive me crazy with every tiny food sound she made, and I don't know why, because it certainly wasn't excessive, but just the fact that I could hear it nearly drove me mad. When I realized I could hear her chewing a banana, I just about hurled.

Normal eating sounds don't really bother me as long as it's standard issue polite -- no lip smacking or whatnot but the sound of chips crunching in particular, doesn't matter how politely they're eaten, the sound makes me shudder.
