The First Rule of the Costume Store is:
The Costume Store is NOT Fight Club! x(

Today two girls and a guy came in. They were looking for a costume for the guy. The girls were heavyset and like, not hot. The guy was really ordinary looking, about 5'8" with shaggy, mousy hair.

When they first came in, I asked them if they had any ideas. They said they sort of had an idea, but they were sort of vague.

First the girls wanted to know if we had any long black coats for the guy. I showed them our cowboy coats, our fiesta coats, our priest frocks, our Matrix coats, and our victorian coats. Every time I pulled something off the rack they would INSIST that I show them something that would fit him.

Now this guy was not skinny... he probably had 20-30 extra pounds, but he was TOTALLY not fat. But these girls were like, "We need something that will FIT!" Everything he tried on was either too baggy or too tight, too long or too short (in their heads). (We've got outfits for EVERYONE... we had a little person come in yesterday... today I helped a guy who was probably 6'5"... the guy in this trio was hardly oddly-sized.)

The guy said nothing about any of the outfits he tried on. He just stood there like a tool.

These three people probably spent about 2 hours in the store.

Finally the girls decided the guy was going to be a priest, but the collared priest shirts we had (that we order out of a catalog that sells clerical supplies) were more money than they wanted to spend. The long clerical frocks we had were also too expensive.

Now we're only SELLING stuff for Halloween. Usually we rent, but we stopped taking rentals last week. In addition, the owner is running a 365 day a year business. We have a lot of stuff that's not like a cheap Halloween costume but that local theater groups will buy for plays, or that people needing period outfits will get for continued use. We sell some cheap stuff that runs 20-30 bucks, but most of the outfits are more than 50 bucks. If you can't afford it, well, that's a bummer, but too bad.

So these girls totally started to bicker. One of the girls was like, "We KNOW what we want! Let's just get it!" The other girl was like, "That's WAY too expensive! Let's do something else!"

The guy said nothing during this discussion.

The girls were in my area bickering for like, a half an hour, then they moved to the front of the store where they were outright arguing, then finally they went out to the sidewalk in front of the store where they had a total shouting match.

So again, The First Rule of the Costume Store is:

The Costume Store is NOT Fight Club! x(

1. I thought the first rule was: If you're gonna try on costume bottoms,
you have to wear undies. But I could be getting the order mixed up...

2. I'm looking for an 18th Century Austrian infantry uniform
from the War of the Spanish Succession period. And it needs to have *real* brass buttons. Got anything for me?
