I just finished putting up an electric fence...ask me anything
I just can't keep my dogs in the yard. They are master excavators. So I ran an electric fence along the bottom of my chain link fence for the perimeter of the yard.

Both dogs have been zapped now and I feel awful.. I'd feel even more awful, though, if they got out and got hit by a car or picked up by our barbaric animal shelter.

Did I do the right thing? I've tried everything within my financial means. And I have to get them out of the house... our baby is almost here.

Ginger, my yellow dog democrat.

Julie, my ham for the camera.

1. We had to do that for the pit bull
She was jumping the fence...but she got shocked twice, and won't go near the fence anymore. Also shocked a kid that was trying to climb the fence to mess with the dog, which was a good thing since Eva could have eaten him. And then we would have gotten sued.

did you post warning signs for the electric fence?
seems as if that would be a liability also... I intend to.

5. Yes, but as the kid wasn't of reading age yet...
And the child of these piece of crap people that lived down the street from us who were constantly getting him taken away...He of course couldn't read it and no one was watching him. So...he got shocked...but it didn't hurt him...it was just like the electric fences my family put up for our cows that we always got the male cousins to piss on...It didn't hurt them, and it didn't hurt the cute little boy from down the street who had better be glad I wasn't his mother and I couldn't spank him, because he needed it.

2. You did the right thing.
They will follow their instinct, and you are protecting them. The electric fence acts as the Alpha dog, in your absence. They'll be fine - don't beat yourself up!

3. thanks for the reassurance
Ginger got hit once (nothing serious, just banged up), so she's pretty streetwise now. (actually looks both ways before crossing the street)

Julie, on the other hand, is a mini-lab, and has no common sense. It took her a total 13.5 seconds to get zapped by the fence after I let her out. Scared her half to death.

11. I think he didn't see the wire
The guy was hunting. I thought it was funny too. But the initial reaction was to grab myself. Yikes.

7. What's the Voltage on the fence?
We felt we had to post a question in order to tell you that you did the right thing for your dogs - they are beautiful

9. its a fence for small livestock and large dogs
It reads 24 Volts DC on my meter. There isn't a voltage on the charger itself. In all fairness, I did touch it so I'd know what it felt like. A little worse than touching a bare AC wire.

For more info, Ginger is 75 Pounds, and Julie is 50.
