JK Rowling just announced that Dumbledore is gay. (Book 7 Spoilers)
No, really.

First, the biggest revelation of the night came when Jo revealed to her audience the fact that Albus Dumbledore is gay and had fallen in love with fellow wizard and friend, Gellert Grindelwald. This, by no doubt, elicited the biggest reaction of the evening with many audience members gasping upon hearing the news. So much so, it promoted Jo to say:

"If I had know this would have made you so happy, I would have told you years ago."

:wow: :wow: :wow:

I knew it! Fandom is going to implode, again! :woohoo:

as soon as Harry saw the memory in the playground... I continued crying like a baby all through the chapters "The Prince's Tale" and "The Forest Again."

Damn.

She just really brought it there.

And yeah, I was musing a while ago about whether Hogwarts was like a... traditional... English boarding school. Especially with Snape and Lucius. :P

I have long thought that the only thing the series was really lacking was a queer character (slash notwithstanding).

And when I say I laughed like a loon for 7 minutes, I mean it.

I may have to do a reread.

21. Dumbledore isn't asexual?
That's a relief! I was worried that all the Hogwarts staff seemed to have no romantic tendencies at all - except for Hagrid and Snape (and Snape's infatuation with Lily was entirely unrequited). I thought they had to take a vow of celibacy or something.

Nice to know they're still human.

32. It's funny... no matter how many times I read each of the books
there's still stuff I *totally forget* between reads.

Like, I reread 1-3 two weeks ago, and I felt like I hadn't read them in YEARS, even though I reread them in the middle of July. :P

I dunno what it is... the books seem so simple, but at the same time it's deceptive. There's a lot there...

Even the first quidditch match in book 1... damn. :(

I already know I'm going to hell, but it's like reading the Bible. You can take ONE PHRASE and read the whole thing in the light of that phrase and get one perspective, and then pick a different phrase or idea and get a totally different perspective. Rereading with the "Dumbledore's gay" theme...

How much more school do you have?

Good ol' J. K., lulling all the gnat-brains into a false sense of security, then dropping this bombshell on them. I can imagine fundies all over the country sneaking into their kid's bedrooms tonight and quietly removing all the Harry Potter books from the shelves. There'll be a tsunami of "moral outrage" and hair-tearing. Beautiful!

Even better will be all the wingnut Harry Potter fans that now have to wrestle with their "consciences," because they admired "a gay." They'll be in their bathtubs, scrubbing the gay out for weeks after this.

Best of all will be the gay children and teens, who will finally have a literary character to call their own. Rowling has done a great service to a lot of kids who may feel they don't have a friend in the world.

33. Huh.
That was one possibility that just didn't occur to me. :P I saw some possibility with Sirius not being straight, if only because of his pining for Harry's dad, and the fact that he never mentioned any girls he was interested in. (at least not that I can recall offhand. It's been a while since I read the books though) And even though I don't think anything happened, I do think there was sexual tension between Harry and Draco, whether they realized it or not. :) So thick you could cut it with a Sectusempra or a Diffendo. :P

He was always my favorate character. I didn't get teary-eyed at that last chapter until they mentioned 'Professor Longbottom'. :P

Well, okay, I got a LITTLE teary-eyed when they said Harry's youngest son's name. But just a little.

Seriously though, when all was said and done, and when the chips were down, Neville was the one to stand up and do what needed to be done. No matter what the cost may have been to himself, he was willing to risk his own life and do what it took. And he proved his true Gryffendor-ness in that last battle. :)

...but young Sirius Black was the one who kept pictures of "bikini-clad Muggle girls," as Rowling put it, in his old bedroom at Grimmauld Place.

Remember too that the poor guy spent years imprisoned in Azkaban and then went on the run after having escaped. There's not much chance of pursuing a relationship in either situation.

I always thought Sirius was bi, and Lupin was gay. The werewolf metaphors were just too strong.

I mean, I wanted to like Lupin/Tonks because they are both awesome characters but in my head, I'm like "the only thing they have in common is homosexuality."

50. A lot of people have mentioned the idea of Tonks and/or Lupin being gay
but I just didn't see it. I dunno, maybe I just saw Lupin as being a bit shy and not that open around people outside of a small circle(although he was adorable so I wouldn't complain if he was), and Tonks... well, no reason that one has to be gay just because she's got short hair and is willing to stand up for herself.

Also, hair color in shades of bright pink or purple is kinda hot. :)

The story ranges in between OOTP and DH. Tonks almost makes herself sick because of it..but I don't want to spoil.
It's very clear what is up between them.

Just sayin' This has nothing to do with who else might be gay...I am just pointing out that we know for sure about this pairing because it is in the books.

Then again, I'm sure there are many gay or bi men who try to cover it up by having pictures of scantily clad women around their living space.

And since they were muggle women it would annoy his parents too, which is always a plus. :)

38. I had long wondered if maybe he was...
And wonder, really, about all the professors - we never hear mention of any of them having spouses of any kind. Not that I think they're all gay, but it's curious that an entire school would be made up of only single people.

But then, they're also all dedicated, and at least at Hogwarts, have long been fighting Voldemort, and perhaps their dedication and focus has left them without time for relationships.

I'm glad to hear that Dumbledore is gay!

40. I think it's wonderful
And even greater that Rowling didn't feel the need to point out the fact in the book. She shows that the most well-developed characters aren't defined by their sexual preference.

I read a great deal of young adult literature, and there are so many books whose lead line or hook mentions that a character is gay, even if that has nothing to do with the actual plot. I hope for a time when gay characters can just be gay without it being mentioned. Rowling has done this.

I admire her much for that.
