Our rector, Msgr. Niebrugge, was critically injured in an accident late this morning when his car was hit head-on by a semi- that lost control on a patch of ice on Rt. 45 south of town. He was returning from his ministry at the Coles Co. Jail in Charleston when he was involved in the accident. He was airlifted to Carle Hospital in Urbana where he is in surgery as we speak. His condition is listed as critical.

Msgr. Niebrugge is 73 and is the sort of priest that Hollywood had in mind when it cast Spencer Tracy in 'Boystown'--- a good and decent man with a particular love for all sorts of lost souls and a special love for the children of this world. He is gentle, merciful and the soul of human kindness and charity. Many claim to do God's work on Earth, but far fewer actually do it; Msgr. is one who does, each and every day. He needs our prayers, and I ask that you offer them up for him. God hears prayer, and answers it.

23. I had to tell Paddy, and I felt like a dog doing it.

This was my first day back at work, and I handled the accident. I called him on my cell to tell him, because I figured it would be better that he heard the truth from me, rather than rumor from someone else. I felt terrible telling him, though, because he and Msgr. Neibrugge are friends as well, not just priest and parishoner.

His injuries were terrible to his chest and abdomen, but he didn't appear to have a head injury, according to the paramedics. The doctors at Carle are wonderful, and it's one of the best trauma centers in the Midwest. I pray God guides their hands in their treatment of Msgr.

He made it through surgery, which the doctor said was a good sign; it's too early to tell, but his surgeon said his heart's strong, his blood pressure is good and they've stopped all the internal bleeding, so... *crossing fingers*
