33. I love Sci-Fi
Edited on Sun Feb-01-04 01:36 PM by Pithlet
Particularly reading it. Your comment reminds me of what happened at a bookstore once when a romance novel author was there for a book signing. She asked me if I liked Romance and then asked what I liked to read when I told her I didn't. The puzzled look on her face when I told her was pretty amusing.

Edited to add that I hope I didn't offend any of my fellow DUers who like romance novels. It's just not my cup of tea. And I watch soaps sometimes, so go figure.

5. Agreed with everything but the last post.
Nothing against women science fiction writers, but really, Philip K. Dick was the best.
Sorry, the title's already taken.

37. Read some of Nancy Kress's novels; they are fun and VERY interesting.
She has a higher idea density in her work than anybody except -- possibly -- Harlan Ellison.

17. I think I would just call it comedy
But the kind of intelligent, subtle comedy that science fiction and fantasy fans tend to be drawn to, such as also Monty Python and most other British humor. :-)

I don't think it is that unusual. I love Sherri Tepper. Every now and then I need a does of sci-fi to put things in perspective.

24. It's not to say that other women don't rock
I'm just singling out the sci-fi babes for special recognition.

I had no sci-fi women in my life until I was in my late 20s; and when I finally met some women through my geophysicist, I was amazed at how much better my life became. Not because of any romantic stuff, but just becuase it was great to spend time with women AND watch Terminator or play Magic.

28. Everyone should have their own geophysicist.
Oh, the times I've needed one!

It's interesting how many scientists enjoy science fiction. It's enjoyable when they not only read it, but write it. (Hence my undying love for Isaac Asimov.) Can't help but wonder if something is lacking in the scientists who don't appreciate SF. Maybe their "what if's" don't reach out far enough.

Oh, speaking of Terminator, I just re-read Killdozer by Sturgeon. Now I can't help but wonder if Terminator was born from that story. I kept seeing scenes from the T1 in my head while reading the saga of Daisy Etta.

31. It's a darn handy thing to have
I always keep one on retainer. :-)

I meant, of course, my geophysicist friend. LOL!

I've never read Killdozer. In fact, I've read very little Sturgeon, I'm shamed to admit.

I also feel that a scientist who doesn't like sci-fi is somehow wrong.

27. Does Being a New Wave Fan Count?
I was born at the end of the New Wave, but find those stories are some of the best. I loathe fantasies and space operas, and prefer Kornbluth, Matheson, Bixby, etc and stories that worry. There are some contemporary writers I like, such as Smith and Scholz (and I recommend Scholz's "Nine Billion Names of God" to anyone who is familar with Clarke's - or not).

Harlan Ellison
Isaac Asimov
William Gibson
Bruce Sterling
Douglas Coupland
Douglas Adams
Stephen King
Isaac Bashevis Singer (a first-rate fantasist of the magic realism school -- none of this cup and sorcery shit for me!)
W.P. Kinsella (another magic realist)
Cordwainer Smith
Norman Spinrad
Esther Friesner

...and friends...

35. Another female SF fan checking in
While my reading has been curtailed a little lately, my very favourite television shows are all SF. But my favourite was Babylon Five. Man I LOVED that show. But all the writers mentioned here are wonderful and so are the movies and programs. I would far rather watch some science fiction story than any love story crapola.

36. Why, this female thank you!
I love science fiction/fantasy. When little, I loved watching Twilight Zone, Outer Limits and My Favorite Martian. Lost in Space was a particular favorite of mine because I'm the same age as Billy Mumy. By the time Star Trek came along I was old enough to begin to appreciate the larger themes of the shows, other than goofy aliens and rocket ships.

I wish I had more time to read it (I'm working my way through Lord of the Rings for the umpteenth time right now), so I usually end up watching SF/F movies, etc. Particular faves:

Star Trek (Classic, Next Gen, DS5 in particular)
Star Wars (Episode IV still my fave)
Babylon 5 (JM Straszinski, you rock my world!)
LOTR (love, love, love what Peter Jackson did with this!)
Harry Potter (Fun, fun, books, movies good interpretation)
Red Dwarf (!)
and more, and more and more!

I don't want to brag too much, but my SF credentials extend to my being a member of the con commitee of a local SF/F convention (700+ attendence). There are many women on our committee and many who attend MarsCon, and the other local conventions, so we're not that rare. Maybe you're not looking for us in the right place!

If anyone wants to know more about it, please PM me and I'll be happy to give more info.
