I had figured Safin to be the dominant player in the world after the 2000 US Open when he just drilled Sampras in the final. It started downhill after the inexplicable loss to Thomas Johanssen in the Aussie final a couple years ago, which got his head in the wrong place and then the injuries.
Federer, to me, is the best player in the world right now. Roddick gets more attention, and has the best serve and forehand, but Federer has every shot in the bag, is as accurate as I've seen anyone in a long, long, time, and has the best all-court game on the circuit.
If Safin makes it all the way back, he, Federer, and Roddick will play each other in many Grand Slam finals. Throw in Ferrero for clay events.
Tonight is too close to call for me...I'm hoping for five sets. Slight edge to Federer; Safin has had two five setters already, Roger is more fresh.
