A squirrel has been hiding peanuts in my yard all morning.
And no, "hiding peanuts" isn't a new euphemism. x( :silly:

I put peanuts out earlier this morning, and he hid them all, so I've thrown out another handful and he's hiding these.

Fun to watch him bouncing around the yard deciding where to hide each nut. I'd love to get into the squirrel mind and know what the criteria are for each particular hiding place, and why he doesn't start in one area and work from there, instead of randomly going from one end of the yard to the other, back and forth, back and forth, with no discernable pattern.

Don't these things study efficiency and logic in squirrel school?

Sheesh.

1. I've watched the blue-jays do the same thing...
The yard squirrel has taken to standing motionless in the top of an evergreen shrub for hours on end staring
to the east lately. Very odd.

5. Squirrels at my mom's house engage in competitive landscaping.
Every single year, they dig up about half the bulbs my mom plants, and replant them randomly around the yard. She gets tulips, daffodils and crocus sprouting in the most bizarre places.

What's even more bizarre is that she hasn't ceded the battle; every year, she keeps right on planting, hopeful that the squirrels won't do what they've done in every single previous year.

two species of jays.

i love watching them -- and there is one who MUST take her first peanut from my hand.

she's even gone so far as to tap me if i come outside without my peanuts and don't see her.

10. I had this clanking sound in my right rear tire (this really is squirrel-related)
I took my car in and asked them to pull the wheel. They did. Found the problem! Walnut. A squirrel had dropped a walnut into the wheel. The clanking was random because, at times, I was braking on it. :wow:

It was burned and cracked but still relatively intact.

13. I have tons of Grey and Fox squirrels, but no more Jays.
Unfortunately, almost all the Jays disappeared due to (I think) West Nile.

Regard, Mugu

14. Bluejays have a hate/a-hole relationship with squirrels
There was his overhanging branch over the sidewalk. Two jays were harassing a squirrel on the branch. All parties *knew* I was approaching. The jays started pecking at the squirrel to make him fall right in front of me in my path. They *knew* I was coming. So what did they expect me to do?-----------squash, chase, stomp the squirrel???!!1

15. I love to watch those cute little critters.

The squirrels are fat and fluffy from eating seeds under my bird feeders. They are so cute chattering and chasing each other through the tall pines.

:hi:
