Today's College Football Thread
It’ll be hard for this week to live up to the excitement of the last two weeks of college football, but there are at least a few interesting matchups on the horizon.

There are only two games between ranked teams:

#1 LSU plays at #17 Kentucky
#11 Mizzou goes to Norman to take on my Oklahoma Sooners.

In each game the favorite is coming off of important wins against heated rivals, so both games could potentially get interesting, but in the long run Missouri is probably more likely to give OU a tough game than Kentucky is to scare LSU.

Some other interesting games on the schedule:

Central Florida played Texas pretty tough a few weeks ago. This week they play #5 South Florida.

Oklahoma State plays at Nebraska, in a game that could either salvage the Huskers season or send it spiraling.

Notre Dame only has one win and Boston College has their highest ranking ever, but ND/BC is always a grudge match.

With the way this season has gone, there are any number of other games that could be upsets …

So what game will you be watching?

2. As much as I enjoy college football (and these threads), I'm off on the boat today
The sun is shining, the high is near 80, the water is still warm and beautiful, the wind is light, I'm just waiting on my wife and daughters to get ready before we cast off for the day. :)

Enjoy the football, but you guys are without my help today.

Hope your son has a good time. Ask him if all the girls attending the game still dress in their nicest clothes and heels. Also, do the guys still wear ties to the games? (I graduated in 1992 when Lelapin was 5)

Very atypical for them, btw. The years I was there were very dark ones for the football program, as far as win - loss records go.

9. Never thought I'd see it ...

... Missouri ranked that high in football. Of course they have had this habit of beating tough teams when you'd least expect them to, so perhaps it's not all that surprising that they seem to be getting it together.

I suspect OU will have its work cut out for them today.

13. I suspect so too
They said this is the highest Missouri has been ranked since (I think) 1981.

I'm not particularly confident about this game. Mizzou has a pretty impressive passing game, and given how good their TEs are supposed to be (and how thoroughly Texas's TE worked us over last week), it could be a long day for the defense. But their defense isn't very good, so we should score--the problem with the Colorado game was that they kept OU's defense on the field all day, but we should have better luck with the running game against Mizzou.

I was watching Game Day this morning and really wishing I was back in Norman--looks like a GREAT day for college football :)

14. Awesome here today ...

My daughter's dorm is just a few blocks from the stadium. Unfortunately I can't convince her that ol' dad should come visit on game day. :-)

There's one problem : wind

It's blowing a typical prairie gale. This might actually work to OU's advantage if they can get their running game going.

OSU in 2003. What an incredible game that was.

OU has done pretty well in big games at home--hopefully this game will turn out like the last time an upstart team from the north, ranked in/near the top 10 for the first time in years, and with a budding heisman candidate QB came to town, when we slaughtered Iowa State and Seneca Wallace in the cold, drizzling rain. I think the score was 52-7. I don't think today will be quite that easy, though :)

Does your daughter get to go to the game? Is she in the Pride? (On edit: I remember she was going to try out last year ... Had to look it up in the archives to be sure, but I don't think I ever found out whether she made it ...)

28. The Pride

She actually changed her mind. She tried out and was accepted, but the band's schedule interfered heavily with her academic interests. She's a math/science sort of major in the honor's college and uses weekends to catch up on homework.

She misses band, but not being a music major, she may well have driven herself crazy trying to keep up. When she showed me what the practice schedule would be, I stopped trying to push her toward it altogether.

But she has gone to games ... with her friends. One day I'll convince her to let the old guy tag along. Maybe if I promise to sit somewhere far away. :-)

The Pride does seem to practice all the time, and when you thrown in pre-game and post-game and sometimes travel, it's a huge commitment. And especially since it sounds like her academic interests keep her plenty busy.

One day I'll convince her to let the old guy tag along. Maybe if I promise to sit somewhere far away. :-)

it's too bad they lost so many players to the NFL and had such a green team. It's going to take a few seasons for them to ramp back up to where they were before...

... and Colt McCoy is a very good young QB.

up 14-0 oat Iowa State in the second quarter.

this is absolutely embarassing for us Husker fans. It is a complete mess.

First win by OkState since 1960 at Nebraska - 47 year drought.

I will continue to support my team - but it gets harder each week.

Calahan has a salary of around $1.75M and just got a 5-year contract. IMO - the AD needs to go first.

Do you know when they've suffered such a bad conference loss at home? I know KSU beat them 38-7 a few years back, but this has got to be the worst home conference loss since at least well back in Osborne's career, I would think.

45. I think he's not only damaged the NU football team, but the entire program including the fan base
Not that I'm bashing NU fans, mind you, but I think Callahan is often pretty classless, and that has tarnished the fans reputation, I think. The OU-NU rivalry was one of the most respectful of college football's greatest rivalries before Callahan got there, but his "f'ing hillbillies" comment down in Norman a few years back seemed to be a harbinger for the rivalry's deterioration.

And the fans were leaving at halftime today. Ten years ago everyone always talked about NU fans as among the classiest in football, but on GameDay the last couple of weeks they've been saying that almost sarcastically.

I am going to have to stop being your friend as my alma matter Maryland plays BC...That ought to be a good game..who knows could have ACC title implications..Terps on bye week. Guess I will be rooting for BC today..So the Terps can knock them out of the top 10 as they did to Rutgers.....:hi:

153. That's twice they've been to OT against league doormats
the flip side of our suffocating home-field (and time zone :-) ) advantage is that occasionally those blue meanies at the WAC make us play on the road.

At this point, though, a win is a win is a win. UH-South Florida at the Dome is still out there...

LSU is in the driver's seat for the moment, but I expected a more lopsided score at this point in the game.

This is turning out to be quite a season where all the top teams are actually having to fight for their status.

80. They bet wrong ...

Thought Missouri would be crap. There was one year during the they *almost* didn't carry the OU-TX game because OU was obviously going to get killed. You'd think they would have learned their lesson from that. OU ended up winning in overtime.

Looks like FSN fixed the graphic. I'm calling foul, however, if OU loses this game and drops to #11. :-)

I hate that it always seems to take them a few games to get up to speed, but this year was the worst. Summer practice should get them ready. It's time for a new coach.

Hey, O-State could go 6-3 in the Pac 10 beating: Stanford, USC(yeah, I said it),U-dub, Wazzu and
then go play the damn Ducks in Autzen.

There are certain truths at play in the Oregon State fortunes.

1. The Beavs never win in Tempe.
2. The Beavs always win at Strawberry Canyon.
3. The home teams always wins the Civil War.
4. THIS is the year the Beavs beat USC at the Mausoleum.

My guess is Ohio State gets the nod, but maybe BC will sneak in. I think S. Florida has as good a claim to it as either of them, though--they have best win of the bunch, and are the only team of the three to have beaten a team in the current top 25 ...

135. Well, as Nick S. said
...don't leave early. Hey with what we're paying the guy {and I've always liked him, as my SO is from NOLA), he's giving us our monies worth in excitement. I didn't want them to have a "Cinderella" year like ,ugh, Terry Bowden had with his first year at Auburn, undefeated, but no chance for the nat'l championship. I just want them to have good, strong year, and then really push it next year. Good things come to those who wait, right?

Otherwise, as a Kentucky native, I'm really jazzed by the 'Cats. I always have a reason to be enthusiastic during basketball season, but this is the first time, even in my loonng memory, to have something to be happy about in football season.

You guys have a really good team, though ... congrats on a game well-played.

The border war should be a helluva game this year. If both teams keep playing the way they're playing now, it could be a top-10 matchup.

152. Yeah, the Oklahoma loss is just particularly nasty because...
if we had just won last night, the season was wide open. No more ranked teams until the final game of the season, when we played Kansas.

If we had just beat OU, we had a chance -- not a good one, but a distinct actual possibility -- of going undefeated on the season.

Unfortunately, we couldn't get past our biggest roadblock. And now both our teams are screwn, since OU already lost early in the season -- to Colorado (WTF?)

By the way, the new polls just hit ESPN.com! Missouri has bumped down from #11 to #15.

Oklahoma is now #4, behind Boston College, South Florida and No. 1 Ohio State.

Good Lord, it has been a weird college football season.
