Maybe it's just me, but I just don't get "Last Tango in Paris"
I mean, am I suppose to be turned on watching these 2 very unattractive people have sex?

It's just a horrible movie, someone explain to me why anyone made a big deal about this movie. And Brando got an Oscar nomination? He's playing the same type of character as Cnl Kurtz from "Acopocalypse Now" - sullen, mysterious and trying to say profound things, except in AN it was great but in LTIP it's like ???????

1. Maria Schneider?
Unattractive? I'll agree that maybe Brando wasn't in tip top shape, but Maria? She could tango with me anywhere she wanted.
Brando's trademark was being sullen and mysterious, he was the master. One of his other trademarks was eating copious amounts of food as well, but he didn't win any awards for that.
It was a film about the strange relationship between the two in regard to Brando's wife committing suicide. After watching the film I think we all know why she did it. ;)

3. No, its not only you...
I hated it too. They probably nominated Brando because it was "his turn". That seems to be the criteria that they use a lot.

Another gross one that I thought was vastly overhyped and over-rated was Blue Velvet.

5. Perhaps you're looking at it too literally....

For me, it was about endings. Almost every aspect of the story was about things which had ended, or were about to end.

The tango, this ephemeral relationship, everything about the story accentuated the historical rather than the present.

Just one's point of view, I suppose.

7. He played a musician and his wife had killed herself
it's a musician thing again, it usually is, the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, no middle ground really.
And that is reflected in "Last Tango"'s characters.
Then there is the warped male perspective in this one. Really, enough said about that.
It is a film to see with your spouse or SO IMO it can lead to interesting conversations about depressing, but very real topics.

8. My mom found out I was smoking dope because of that damned movie
Went to the drive-in more to get high than to see the movie, couldn't understand shit through the lousy drive-in speakers, and left the baggie in my coat pocket. The next day my mom was getting my clothes ready to go back to college and get what she found.

Damn you, Marlin Brando, DAMN YOU!

9. Movie was about
Alienation of affection in modern times. I though the movie would be dirty (first X-rated movie I ever saw). I was really taken off guard. Personally, I really LIKED the movie. You weren't meant to get warm fuzzies over their relationship. I've know people like this, who compartmentalize their lives. Scary.
A better movie about the same condition, "Damaged" starring Jeremy Irons, still haunts me.
