I once broke up with a girl I dated for about a month by email. I felt really bad about it and realized the reason why I was doing it was because I was afraid to do it in person.

I since got over that self-absorbed feeling and realized that doing it in person is necessary to show the person respect and caring although you think it won't work out between the two of you. So I never did it again.

I think the guy is probably just at a cowardly stage in his relating with his significant others as I was. Nothing you can do about that so not your fault :)
