In a 92-year-old 7-room two-story house with basement (that has a working heat vent in the laundry area). On Peoples Energy "budget" plan, gas bill is currently $212 a month. Also gas stove and dryer.
Hey! My workday got cut short by 5 hours. It was a hellish week. Found out Monday my brother-in-law will have prostate cancer surgery on Tuesday, then my nephew in the National Guard is going to Afghanistan for the spring offensive -- 365 days at least and he had to withdraw from college. My level of concentration was in the toilet.
It was wonderful to have the week cut short. Hell, I went to buy new gloves since my old ones had died.
We have a pellet stove which I am scared to fire up because I don't like burning things in the house. But really the house is usually OK. It's the friggin' outdoors that's the problem. That and the car. COLD! COLD COLD COLD!
I turned on the defrost one morning this week and it blew ice crystals at me. It was like I had discovered the secret of snowmaking by accident.
11. Boston has had the coldest January since the 1880s
Averaging 21 degrees-normal is 37. We had some of the coldest windchills ever recorded this month. It was a living hell! Today it was 25 and felt balmy. It's supposed to be in the upper 30s/40s for the enxt week or so-which is more normal.
Someone was telling me a flying horror story about how the deicer spray froze on the plane. Shudder.
My partner gets very worried about the homeless whenever it gets this cold. It really bothers her thinking of them being out in all this. I hope most of them can find somewhere to warm up.
