How come we don't sneeze in our sleep?
At least, I don't. Have allergies lately and will sometimes sneeze on verge of sleep, but I've never woken myself up. And during some absolutely scintillating party chatter this weekend, I've learned that others don't sneeze themselves awake either.

What gives?

1. I have no idea what I do in my sleep.
I know the beagle barks and runs in her sleep. The cats shake like little vibrators. But, for all I know, I'm the Queen of Borneo 6-7 hours out of every 24.

2. Google knows all..
http://amos.indiana.edu/library/scripts/sleepsneeze.html

...we don't sneeze while we sleep. To understand why, first we need to know why we sneeze while we're awake.

...the area of the brain responsible for the sneeze reflex relaxes while we sleep. So, even when a particle does touch the nose lining, the brain doesn't notice, and we don't sneeze.

Interesting!!

3. Hmmm...
That's what got me, i.e., little particles and what not still have to be hitting our nose sensor thingies...

How curious that we don't feel the need to violently usher those things out if we are sleeping. Cool beans. Thanks, PN....

:hi:

18. It goes back to how our brains register the sensations.
If our brain waves are in the different stages of sleep, then our brains will not perceive the thing in our nose. If it never perceives the thing in our noses, it never reacts to it. Oh, wow, I could so go there and make a "against the rules" joke at this point, but I won't.

4. We also don't sneeze when we are fearful, or in the midst of great passion.

I think I read that it has something to do with adrenaline shutting down the sneezing process.

5. There's no joke potential there
"We don't sneeze when we are fearful" would let me make a joke about never sneezing.

"We don't sneeze when in the midst of great passion" would let me make a joke about sneezing constantly.

I can't do both. :(

YOU'VE GOT TO GIVE ME SOMETHING I CAN WORK WITH!!!11

9. Pssst. That was a fake sneeze.

I just did it so I could cover you in my girl germs, and then hit you up for a kleenex. It's my newest flirting technique.

7. Pastor Dan who taught us the
"Where Do Babies Come From: My Parents or God?" during Vacation Bible School said that when parents shared their passion for each other before the lord, the man felt like he had to sneeze "down there."

What gives?

11. Oh man, I am SO glad you asked Oedi about this instead of me!

I might ask Pastor Dan though, how he knows what it feels like when a man shares his passion with a woman. Or another man, for that matter. And before the Lord? Isn't that a bit rude? I mean, shouldn't the Lord always come first? Wait, I don't mean...! I mean, uh... oh geez!

12. well
Sneezing

I've studied people sneezing
here at home, and at my school.
Sneezing sure is funny.
Sneezing sure is cool.

Some people sneeze real quietly,
like a teensy little mouse.
My dad can sneeze so loudly
that it echoes through our house.

Most girls sneeze politely,
like ah-choo... or ah-ka-choo.
Sometimes they try and hide it
in a cough, then look at you.

The boys I know don't do that.
They just let their sneezes blow!
The louder, WOW, the better!
It's just something all guys know.

The weirdest ones I've heard so far
are the ones my mom can do.
Her sneezes come out sounding
a lot like, who-asked-CHOO?

Just be careful if you hold a sneeze
or suck your breath in tighter,
or when the sneeze comes busting out
... it'll bring a barking spider.
