Michelle Obama in accident with motorcycle in Iowa

A minivan carrying the wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was involved in a car accident this afternoon in northern Iowa where she was campaigning for her husband.

Neither Michelle Obama nor any members of the campaign staff were injured in the accident on the two-lane road, although the vehicle was totaled. It was being driven at the time by a campaign staff member.

The other vehicle was a motorcycle. The campaign said the motorcyclist was transported to a nearby hospital.

"Barack and Michelle's thoughts and prayers are with him and his family at this time," the campaign said in a statement.

The accident happened about 3:30 p.m. in Hampton, Iowa, according to spokesman Ben LaBolt.

A Washington Post reporter was following Michelle Obama at the time and provided this report.
