I just paid almost $40 for $25 general admission tickets to see Willie Nelson. There were at least 4 different fees associated with that, including a $2.50 fee to print the tickets at home. Of course the venue used TicketBastard, which I gather nearly everyone does. That's what you get with a monopoly. Maybe I would have been better off going down to Concrete Street and buying them on the day of the show. If my friend hadn't already bought HIS ticket I would have given up. From now on the only concerts I am going to will be in bars or very small venues that do not use Ticketmaster.
I went to a really good show with a big draw national band playing a small local venue. Tickets cost $25. I bought them at a local record store (we still have a few left) and they set me back all of $25. And the show was fucking amazing, I could not possibly have had more fun at some $300 stadium tour to pay some aging rock star's child support.
And that's what I try to do. I think Ticketmaster is essentially a monopoly. I don't know of a single large venue that does not use. I know some bands are upset with those fees and do not want to use them but I am sure they have trouble getting places to play in that case.
