1. i was enthralled by a PBS show about this very thing
i was flipping channels (no cable, so i can get through them all in about 6 seconds) when i saw some redneck in a meshback cap wandering through a muddy stream. "hey, that looks weird", i thought. and i was right!

i sat there for about 10 minutes, enraptured at the spectacle of grown men sticking their hands down catfish holes. i even dragged MrsCoffee to the couch, and she too was in awe of these brave souls who pull giant catfish from the depths. we watched the whole thing.

3. i had no idea people even did that
i've been catfishing plenty, but i'd never in a million years stick my bare hand down there and try to grab one. they bite like hell.

come to find out it's a family tradition. huh.

4. My cousin is very quick with his hands
When we were kids he used to snatch trout out of a river. He also starting catching flies in mid-air when he was 5. Not the most sanitary thing in the world.

7. I used to noodle quite a bit
when I was a kid. I re thought the whole thing one day when I was out noodling with my friend and his dad. His dad stuck his hand into a hole in the bank looking for a big catfish and there was a beaver in the hole. Bit one of his fingers damn near off :wow:

I switched to more finger-friendly methods of catching catfish after that.

8. I went to grad school with a guy who used that as part of his study
He was looking at the efficacy of nesting boxes for catfish on big rivers, as i recall. He'd grab the fish out of the boxes.
