I think I've figured out the reason people use 'impact' as a verb
It's easier than trying to remember the difference between "affect" and "effect."

11. Those are actually two different things
An impact can happen between two moving objects, but a collision is between a moving object and a stationary one — or, so say the hard-core linguists.

...Or is it the other way around?

15. Einstein says otherwise.
The stationary object only appears stationary because of your frame of reference. :D

10. Answers.com says:
The use of impact as a verb meaning “to have an effect” often has a big impact on readers. In our 2001 survey, 85 percent of the Usage Panel disapproved of the construction to impact on, as in the sentence These policies are impacting on our ability to achieve success; fully 80 percent disapproved of the use of impact as a transitive verb in the sentence The court ruling will impact the education of minority students. • It is unclear why this usage provokes such a strong response, but it cannot be because of novelty. Impact has been used as a verb since 1601, when it meant “to fix or pack in,” and its modern, figurative use dates from 1935. It may be that its frequent appearance in the jargon-riddled remarks of politicians, military officials, and financial analysts continues to make people suspicious. Nevertheless, the verbal use of impact has become so common in the working language of corporations and institutions that many speakers have begun to regard it as standard. It seems likely, then, that the verb will eventually become as unobjectionable as contact is now, since it will no longer betray any particular pretentiousness on the part of those who use it.

18. Shall we now discuss the use of the words "troop" and "troops"?
Another pet peeve of mine.
Troop: 1.) and assembled company; gathering; herd or flock 2.) (Usually plural) a body of soldiers; soldiers collectively 3.) cavalry unit corresponding to a company of infantry 4.) a body of Boy Scouts consisting of four patrols of eight scouts each

Get it, you stupid news bastards? A body of soldiers; soldiers collectively. A troop is not one soldier. One soldier is a soldier. Three soldiers are not three troops, they are three soldiers.

21. And... and...
"Cohort" is a group of people who associate with you, or your entourage, not a singular person -- unless your entourage or your circle of friends is limited to one person. It's not a synonym for a "friend". It's not to be used as a plural (i.e., "cohorts" for "friends"), unless one has several discrete entourages scattered around the country.

And "kudos" is singular. It's not the plural of "kudo". There's no such thing as a "kudo".

Also, it's "Welsh rabbit" not "Welsh rarebit", and "chaise longue" not "chaise lounge", dammit!

It's awkward, though. I can't imagine a sense in which it would be used.

They pointed out that some sergeants, commanders etc. use "troop."

Yeah, that makes it proper.
