Institution finds the definition of 'rock' stretched by eligible dance pop, hip-hop acts.

Is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ready for Madonna and the Beastie Boys? The Material Girl of pop and the clown princes of New York hip-hop are the biggest names on the final ballot for hall membership, along with Hoosier hero John Mellencamp, who is a more straightforward option for an institution that is increasingly finding that its definition of "rock" is being tested.

The nine nominees on this year's ballot are rounded out by elegiac songwriter Leonard Cohen, disco stars Donna Summer and Chic, hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa, the British Invasion's Dave Clark Five and the Seattle surf-rock founding Ventures. Acts become eligible for induction 25 years after their first recording is released. Nominees are selected by a panel of musicologists and historians; inductees are then selected by about 500 voters that include performers, producers, music-industry executives and journalists.

After much criticism for overlooking rap in recent years, the hall inducted its first hip-hop act, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, earlier this year. The Beastie Boys or Bambaataa may well follow March 10 when five of the nine nominees will be welcomed in at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York.

1. Why not rename the thing to "Big list of people, half of which are sleazy" and have it done?

Talent or ability or being able to strive above limitations isn't what being recognized is about. It's about how scandalous and/or controversial one can be.

Next year, vote Britney Spears in. What the hell. The year after that, vote in Sandra Day O'Connor. She's just as much a relevant, hip rock'n'roll group as Madonna is. :crazy:

Sheesh. "Rock and roll" means "rock and roll". Have a list for pop, rap, country, nose picking, and every other form of genre if you'd like. Or a 'best music ever' group to cover everybody and somebody will still have a snit fit when Vanilla Ice wins an award. :eyes:

2. The Beasties started as a punk band.

They also sampled Zeppelin pretty heavily in the early hip hop years. Much of their recent successes has been "rock" as well. "Gratitude" and "Sabotage" are two of their bigger hits. Both are rock and they play their own instruments. Their last album was instrumental. They dabble heavily in jazz and funk, too.

I say they deserve it.
