Ikea said the box weighed 82 pounds
Ikea fuckin' LIED!!!!

A body part that I didn't know I had is now aching. And I think I've lost two inches of height.

Methinks Ikea got their metric-to-english conversions backwards or sumptin'...

:groan:

4. The "Billy" bookshelves
I got boxes and boxes of books scattered all over my new apartment. I decided to hit up Ikea after picking up my son. He had birthday money to spend, so I got him a toybox, a short version of the Billy bookshelves, and a few toys.

I got myself the tall (translation: HEAVY) Billy bookshelves, an extension unit, and a three packs of their cheap fluorescent lightbulbs (3 for $3.99!).

Looks like I'll be spending some quality time with that little Ikea tool... :-)

6. "Billy"?
That's a most un-Ikea name. When I go in there, everything seems to be called something "Akcjaaa" or "Schlongg," or something.

16. Hope not 'merican books would fit in a metric bookshelf.
You need french lit or poetry if y'all goin to have non-'merican shelves.

23. Shit. I'll need an adapter, then.
I'm sure those metric-lovers measure the pitch of the printed letters instead of the sane, American way of measuring letters per inch.

Dammit!

3. I had to move something into my apartment that Office Max said weighed 300lbs
I was trying to drag it up the stairs and into my apartment all by myself. Then, fortunately for me, the box broke open spilling the various parts of the desk all over the sidewalk. After I'd moved about 1/3 of the pieces into my apartment (about 20 minutes of work in 90 degree heat), I noticed that some of the pieces had been damaged, and I had to carry it all back out, and lift 200 pounds into the van with the help of someone I flagged down on the sidewalk.

The manager said that the box was so badly damaged it should never have left the store. Nevertheless, I only got a 10% discount on some crappy, lesser desk which I'm sitting at now.

9. Sounds like you enjoy pain...
Ooch!

I fashioned a shoulder strap out of a tiedown strap to help haul the beast up. Only one flight of steps, fortunately, and I live right at the top of them.

It was enough.

14. That was not a great experience
and I don't enjoy pain. Well, not that much... but I don't mind confronting problems like that because it makes me feel like I'm not wasting my time lifting weights at the gym and that there's some practical application for all that working out.

15. I got the same bookshelves..3 in fact, with glass doors for 2 of them.
Edited on Sat Sep-29-07 05:51 PM by BrklynLiberal
I hired someone recommended by IKEA to put them together for me. Two young guys came to the house and did it all in less than 1 hour.
It was worth the $$ cause I am sure it would have taken me days.

18. Somebody on the Internetz said it was hard to do without a helper
I didn't have any problems at all, though.

The doors look nice, but they're a bit pricy, IMO.

17. Update: I'm an idiot
I sucessfully assembled all three of my Ikea creations today.

BUT...

The extension unit for my tall bookshelf I can't use. When I attach it to the top, it's less than an inch from the ceiling and looks way out of place. Plus, I can't attach the anti-tip bracket to it with the extension added.

Here's the kicker. I can't return the extension because, like all the furniture I put together today, I glued everything together with wood glue. So, no returns. And I can't put the extension on the short but otherwise identical bookshelf I got for my son because they are different colors.

And the second BUT...

When I put my son's new toybox together, I put the bottom on upside-down. So the finish is underneath and the screws are on top. :banghead:

Of course, I realized this after I had a) glued everything together, and b) nailed the back panel down.

<sigh> Oh, well, I'll line the bottom with a blanket or something...

Believe me, I know how you feel. I have been there..done that.

28. Alas, no...
His the dark brown wood finish, and I got the medium "beech" finish for mine. I wanted his to match some of the other furniture in there.

Oh, well. I'll use it for something. Maybe I can screw it into the top of my TV unit.

21. Hi Krispos!
Next time get one of the guys in the parking lot to help.

My son works at the Costa Mesa IKEA.

That's what those guys do, help you load your car.

When you get home, get some help.

--Sincerely, one who has the crappiest back around.

:hi: ;-)

22. Hello back!
It wasn't the getting on the car part that was the problem. Not giving a shit about your car's paint job is enormously liberating!

From the cart, lever one end up on the trunk. Swing it around, lever the other end up on the roof, and ratchet the tie-down straps tight.

As to the "getting it home" part, well, you weren't there to help!

Maybe I should have asked LaraMN or LydiaLeftcoast for a hand...

I hope your back is OK- those boxes weigh a ton.

24. Maybe they were trying to save money on shipping by lying about the weight.
We actually have 'auditors' at my job who just stand outside trucks with scales and grab random packages to weigh and measure them to catch cheaters like that in the act. Their entire job is to try and save the company more money than it costs for the company to pay their salary and buy new scales and tape measures. :)

It just seemed heaver than that!

I handle 125-pound boxes of parts at my job on a daily basis. However, when ever I have to move of those any distance I get a damn forklift!!!! :-)

26. Shipping weight is not actual weight.
It a calculation of weight, volume and dimensions.
