Madonna tops Rock Hall nominees list
Also nominated:

John Mellencamp
Beastie Boys
Donna Summer
Chic
Afrika Bambaataa
Leonard Cohen
The Dave Clark Five
The Ventures.

Not a bad list. Bambaataa and Cohen are interesting choices. Madonna, Mellencamp and the Beastie Boys are pretty obvious. And I thought Summer, Chic and the Dave Clark Five were already in.

1. Funny. If you rewind to 1986
would you have ever guessed that the makers of "Like a Virgin" and "Fight For Your Right To Party" would be nominated to the RRHOF?

2. Madonna OBVIOUS?!?
When artists like Cheap Trick and Todd Rundgren still aren't in? It's not a "Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame," it's a sham.

15. Madonna getting nominated ahead of Roxy Music or artists like Richard Thompson and Nick Cave
proves that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is more about maximizing the tourist dollars than honoring actual accomplishment.

Without a doubt, Madonnna is talented but does she have a fraction of the talent demonstrated by bands that have been around longer and who still haven't gotten a nomination? Not by a long shot.

3. Yeah. That hard-rocker Madonna. Woo-hoo.
At least Bambaataa pioneered a genre and was one of the first to cross over with rock artists as well (albeit after Run DMC did it). Madonna is the musical equivalent of Buzz Lightyear's "Falling . . . with style".

I don't get the Donna Summer and Chic noms either. I mean, I like "I Feel Love" and Rodgers/Edwards awesome production skills as much as the next music snob, but let's face it. These artists aren't rock by any stretch.

Is this just the committee's continuing middle finger towards all things prog or what? Genesis, Yes, ELP, Rush, King Crimson? These groups don't ring a bell?

6. Invisible Touch - > on Genesis sucks.
95% of everything before that ranges from passable (s/t) to outright outstanding (Selling England By the Pound, Nursery Cryme).

That being said, Madonna belongs nowhere NEAR a ROCK HOF before progressive ROCK groups do.

12. Regardless of whether or not you like it, it's still Rock.
Unlike Madonna, which is ersatz pop fluff.

19. So I guess it's official, then?
We're declaring war on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

I guess we can't count on General MrCoffee this time.
Who's gonna rally the troops?

The Monkees has more of a right to be in the Hall of Fame than she does.

(one used pop synth and objectionable lyrics to get noticed, the other started out as a manufactured image but fought their way to LEGITIMACY.)

16. Madonna is NOT a rock singer.
If she is, they're really stretching the definition of "rock singer"

17. A thin year indeed...
Sorry, I don't see Leonard Cohen as Hall material. Fine poet. Not a rocker.

Bambabaataa was influential and ground-breaking, for a couple of years, in a very tangential way. Influence is not enough to get you into the Hall, however. Not for a musician from the '70s and '80s.

Between Dave Clark and the Ventures, who would I pick? Ventures. The academy will probably do otherwise.

Oh, I'd better read the full list of nominees. I thought this was the whole thing. My bad. I stand by my opinions, however.

18. The full list? Ugh...
Sorry, Madonna. Not on my watch, lady. Beastie Boys have surpassed my expectations so many times, so yeah, they get the nod from me. I guess it's just hard for me to accept kids my own age getting in the Hall.

I coulda been there! I coulda been a contender! But I took the short money and I took the fall! (Specifically, my parents paid me $200 to STOP practicing the clarinet when I was 11.)

As I said in my previoust post: A thin year for hall of fame rockers.

20. Cougarcamp, ventures and DC 5
The others are ridiculous, if only that none of are rocknroll.

22. The Ventures certainly for their influence, but are any of the rest really "Rock Hall of Fame"...
material?
Cohen is incredible, one of my favorite srtists, but hardly qualifies as "rock"
Dave Clark Five are enjoyable, but...get real!
Mellencap is a journeyman. A collection of influences.
Madonna is pop, In both intent and execution.
Bambaataa is influential, but is he a conscious influence on those who came later?
Summer and Chic's work during their 15 minutes of relevacy made quite clear which side they came down on in the rock vs other divide. That, along with the the slightness of their work, should disqualify them.
"Paul's Boutique" is brilliant, but the Beastie Boys are also essentially journeymen.

24. Re: Cougarcamp
you may have a point; he'd be an "on the bubble " type for me; a journeyman perhaps but ultimately a lot of good rock and roll out of him over the years. And with a few exceptions for true visionaries, who isn't a collection of influences? But I see your point. Gotta respectfully disagree about the DC 5 though. They ROCKED. Sure, they were no Beatles or Stones or Animals, but still belong . Agree totally with the rest of your post. Cohen in ROCK hall of fame ? Songwriters hall, absolutely. I still think its ridiculous that James Taylor is in. These threads and disagreements are fun; we DUers, at least me, spend enough time frettin' about our country and world that its nice to be "arguing" about "issues" like this one. Rock on, Mitchum.
