I need to mud and tape.
Do I mud, then tape, then mud again, or do I mud right over the tape, then mud again?
Does that even make sense?

1. There's sanding to do amongst all that, too.

I *really* recommend that you cover up stuff that you don't want to get dusty. Dang stuff gets everywhere. :grr:

Try some practice taping on a scrap piece of drywall so you can hone your technique. :)

5. I'd recommend for a first timer..

you get the fiberglass tape that actually holds itself to the surface w/o mud. Put a length of that on, and then mud over it, for your first step.

The fiberglass tape is much easier.
The other recommendation is if one uses the regular tape, spring for the flexible corner tape for the inside joins such as where the wall meets the ceiling. That saved me a lot of time on the second drywalling effort

7. mud, tape, mud, sand, mud, sand, mud, sand

you'll grow to despise sanding.

9. The proper tools: corner mud tool, wide mud tool, narrow mud tool, mud holder

(the mud holder is a metal plate with a handle underneath it that you put a glob of mud on and then scrape off the excess on the edge of the holder) and several sandpaper holders including the sander on a pole that has a swivel type attachment.

You can hang damp sheets in the doorways and over things in order to capture and contain the dust.
The dust is a bitch. :(

Multiple layers of mud are required. Unless you are a professional, you can't usually get it right on the first try. ;)

edit: There are metal corner pieces that go around corners where there is no door frame. You mud and sand (and mud and sand) over these.

10. enjoy, it's fun to mud and tape, but the sanding sucks, also, wear a face mask

that dust is terrible.

I watched our carpenter sheetrock our home....he put the taping in the mud before he slapped it on the wall, kinda like wetting wallpaper sheets. He used that flat spatula to even things out..he mudded the joints a couple of times and sanded a couple of times. If it doesn't look good, put some texture on the walls, no one will see it.

I don't have much experience mudding, but did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.....:)
