I have a friend who is into aquariums and aquarium related stuff. He has a salt water aquarium that he figures is worth $3000. He says he's got about $300 in it and the rest he got by trading and selling stuff that people have basically given to him just to be rid of it. I think that's a great idea.
That led to think of something like this. I've run across a car for sale that's in good condition aside from needing a transmission. The guy wants $1000 for it. Kelly Blue Book value for it for private sale is about $2800 in good condition. I'm not handy with a wrench, but I've got a friend of the family who owns an auto repair shop who might be able to cut me a deal on repairs. I'm thinking that I could net $1000 on the vehicle. Anybody ever tried something like that? Let me know how it worked out.
