I want to live in the fantastic Alaska of Northern Exposure
At this time of year, I always remember the episode where the characters were good-naturedly competing with one another to see how many pounds they had GAINED before the onset of winter, causing Joel to splutter with doctorish frustration. Sigh. I know it was just a TV show, but...want!

Well, at least I have bulky sweaters to look forward to!

46. Feh! Remember the Northern Exposure philosophy:
"It's not the thing you fling, it's the fling itself!"

(Does that apply in this case? Who cares? It sounds deep!)

:hi:

The pizza there will put some pounds on ya for sure.

(For those unaware, Northern Exposure was filmed in Roslyn.)

5. Problem is, Roslyn is just a run-down little burg bearing only a superficial
resemblance to Cicely, AK. Populated with PNW rednecks (Janine Turner would feel at home there, at least) and boring as hell after you've driven through it just once. I live a ninety-minute drive away and have no real desire to go again.

13. how do the PNW rednecks differ from your garden variety redneck?
just curious. There are a lot of rednecks in texas, but they are your general, stereotypical garden variety redneck.

There is an open spittoon under the bar with mountain water flowing through it. You really should go. The interior is entirely different than in the program.

And they have good beers. Andy was driving and drank Coke.

Although the Roslyn scenery (greenery) seemed nice. I always wanted to visit when the show was on. Heard that the locals were getting kind of irritated with the touristas at that time, though.

25. Funny you should mention it. We've been watching our NE dvds lately, since we
got rid of our cable. What a great show.

Although I couldn't live in Alaska. I truly and utterly loathe winter. And the days with no sunlight would probably kill me. I'd love to visit in the summer though.

26. Radio Lady and hubby, Audio Al, made that trip in 1994... We loved that show.
Edited on Wed Sep-26-07 11:45 PM by Radio_Lady
Al bought a sweatshirt with Northern Exposure and the moose on a gray background.

"Hey, honey, we should go back some time. It's closer now than when we lived in Boston."

If you possibly can, you should go to Anchorage or Seward. Pretty neat places. Someday, he'll tell you the story of walking the cloverleaf interchange... on a bike path.

48. Go to see the new movie, "Into the Wild" with Emile Hirsch, opening October 5th, in Portland, OR
but on a platform release elsewhere (it might have opened as early as September 21 in other areas).

Actor Sean Penn and his cinematographer have captured the fantastically beautiful and dangerous Alaska. You'll have to decide whether the story is mostly fact or fiction.

44. Too bad it's idealized
I do a lot of biz in Seattle, hometown of WAMU. I've been to Roslyn too, and while I'm bemused by the PNW rednecks (GOPIE would be the first to tell you a redneck is a redneck is a redneck)the town is like all sets; it's really very pedestrian beyond the exteriors. I would LOVE to find a town like Cicely, but the cold is much colder in person. I'm a SoCal native. Might be hard to take for months on end.

The other cool TV town in Washington is North Bend, Washington, which is kind of the town from TwinPeaks. The peaks are there. So is a lot of the weird stuff from the show. The trestle. Log. The diner, which probably sells a shitload of cherry pie. I had some there, for sure.
Snoqualmie is close by and the lodge from Twin Peaks is the Salish lodge at the top of the Falls. North Bend is kind of the the other direction from Rosalyn, but either is a great day trip from the Seattle area. between Roslyn and North Bend, I liked North bend better.
