19. I hate it, I think it's stupid especially the mean little kid and dumb dog that talks.
It reminds me of that other awful cartoon called "Wait 'Til Your Father Gets Home"

31. Showin' yer age, Sequoia! But you're right...
...That's one of those '70s shows that I had the misfortune of viewing once or twice as a teenager and the goddamn theme song's been in my head ever since. ("Wait til your father gets/Until your father gets/Wait til' your father gets home..."). Deemded as somewhat subversive at the time, "Wait Til Your Father Gets Home" was, in my humble opinion, a response to the success of "All in the Family," and possibly "Sanford and Son." In later years, we'd get "Married with Children," a far snarkier and offensive version of lower-middlee-class family life, which was infinitely more effective. "Family Guy" is HUGELY over-rated. I enjoy the talking dog and the Chris-Hitchens toddler, but nine times out of ten, the shows go nowhere and rely on simplistic, old-skool humor. "Southpark," by contrast, is often truly subversive, and will always rank highly in my book.

That is NOT an acceptable replacement. Did they do it because of "South Park" controversy or because "Family Guy" gets better ratings where you are?

42. Gee, I usually like fall...
...but thinking of you enduring "Family Guy" instead of "South Park" this autumn is going to take a tiny bit of my pleasure away, as I watch the leaves change their colors and the geese fly southward in their respeldent "V" formations. When I see the geese, Sequoia, I will think of you enduring "Family Guy." Yet, inevitably, my thoughts will turn to the Paris Hilton episode of "South Park." As they too often do.

5. I don't waste time on it either
I watched the Star Wars episode, which was great except for a few really dumb parts that made me wonder about the morons I was sharing that hour of tv with :) (This kinda stuff is why I had to mostly stop watching tv, it scares me what passes for entertainment between the commercials, but that's a whole nother thread right there)

9. I don't like it either. My kids do, though.
I love outrageous humor and the political leanings of the show seem to be in the right place, but it just doesn't work for me. It's ham-handed and relies too heavily on trash culture references, and the crude sexual jokes are without wit.

12. It's off-the-wall random and edgy, and to many people that automatically = funny
Edited on Tue Sep-25-07 12:15 PM by WildEyedLiberal
I've been subjected to more Family Guy than I ever cared about seeing because it's pretty much THE comedy show phenomenon on college campuses. My friends are ridiculously fanatic about it: "OMG you've GOT to watch Family Guy!!! WHAT???? How can you not think it's funny??????"

The expectation is that you'll laugh at literally ANYTHING the characters say, even if there's no wit or cleverness involved at all. I really hate the "flashbacks" where Peter or whoever will be like "Remember the time I (did something really inane and off the wall and which is supposed to be funny on account of its sheer absurdity)"? Off the wall, crude, and offensive does not necessarily equal hilarious, and that's the big mistake the Family Guy writers make.

20. Agreed. The flashbacks are inane.
I've tried to like it, because I have friends who think it's hilarious. But everytime I begin to think "Hmmm....maybe it's not too bad", there'll be one of those "...like the time I was Nixon's chauffeur" or whatever moments. "Stupid" is too nice a word for it.

I hate the flashbacks!
If it's a funny situation, just mentioning it should be funny - we don't need to actually see it played out.

I've been forced to watch it a couple times -- at best, I'll get one small chuckle an episode. It's a piece of crap, and not worth wasting time on.

On the other hand, even the worst episodes of Titus will give you a couple good laughs.

The precision, detail and care with which they approach stuff is quite impressive.

That Star Wars episode was a prime example. They got everything right, and yet still managed to stay true to the vibe of the show.

Lots of different shows though. People like different shit.

once the old ones get old. Unexpectedly long pauses and weird random flashbacks are funny the first few times... not as much anymore.

36. The Simpsons is better, usually. The PJs were the best.
And Fox took off the show that was BETTER than the Simpsons: The PJs.

A Claymation joint project of Eddie Murphy and Ron Howard. As good as the Simpsons at its best. But they took it off, because there was a crack addict. It was about black people in the projects, and the PC people objected because everyone wasn't squeaky clean like they were on the Cosby Show.

The main character was Thurgood Orenthal Stubbs, a not very bright superintendent in a high rise project.
I got the "Thurgood" and "Orenthal" references but it took me a while to figure out who "Stubbs" was. Singer in the Four Tops, now deceased, I believe.

Smokey the Crackhead: Wears button saying "Lose Weight Now, Ask Me How".

43. You aren't alone. It's so wanna be.
You remember that couple of seasons when the Simpsons went bad cause instead of finding the humor in Homer the character, they just had him do anything shocking and "unexpected", which soon enough became expected, just for a laugh?

Well, I think the Family Guy is like those two seasons turned into a cheap knock off, but with a bigger, fatter, less funny Bart and a bigger, fatter, less funny Homer, and a talking dog and a talking baby who isn't nearly as funny as Maggie, and a lot of topical celebrity put downs.

It's like the Simpsons for stupid people.
