My oven door exploded Saturday night! -- WTH? - (4 pics) Ever heard of this?
Edited on Mon Sep-24-07 10:24 AM by Breeze54
My son was frying up some bacon on a burner for BLT's and suddenly there was a loud explosion
and my black glass oven door had exploded!! We hadn't even used the oven for at least a week!
Have you ever heard of such a thing? I searched on the net but didn't find much about it.

This freaked he and I out and now I have a small piece of glass stuck in my foot.
Argh! I can't get it out. :(

4. I found info about Pyrex on the net but only found
a few things about GE doors exploding and a few things about microwave doors.
That's a Roper stove. I have no idea how old it is though. I'm guessing 6 - 10 yrs.

9. Thanks! I was trying to see who bought them out!
It isn't my stove though. I rent but I'm afraid I'll be charged for the glass replacement.
Although the landlord just came by and said he'd never heard of that happening (uh-oh) and
he is replacing the stove tomorrow and taking this one to a recycle place.

2. The only possible explanation I could think of...
would be that it was particularly cold in your house and the oven got really hot quickly. Otherwise, I'm at a loss.

Geez, that stove looks eerily similar to my own. Except my glass door hasn't yet exploded.

Glad everybody's relatively okay.

12. Be careful! When it exploded, the glass
shot all around the kitchen, into the dining room and
I didn't know that and that's where I picked up the glass.

11. That's exactly what my
landlord just said. It doesn't help in any way as I can't see inside the oven with that glass.

Good question! Why have it at all?

15. I'm wondering if it was a retro-fit.....
Edited on Mon Sep-24-07 10:56 AM by SacredCow
Perhaps the steel front plate was scratched, so the retailer decided to replace it but didn't have an appropriate part?

If I'm not mistaken, I would expect that any glass oven door should be made of TEMPERED glass (which that was clearly not judging by the size of the broken pieces).

On edit: or maybe I can't see enough detail. The big pieces that I see in the pics- are they all cracked up? Tempered glass breaks into small, almost gravel-like pieces while untempered will have the sharp jagged edges.

17. The pieces are all different sizes. I still have them.
Very tiny to some as large as 3 inches across.

There is glass inside the oven, in the drawer below the oven and also under the stove.

I even found glass outside on the steps!

18. Then that glass wasn't tempered.
And probably shouldn't have been on an oven door.

I don't know whether it's a requirement, given that it wasn't an actual window into the chamber though. But I'd imagine that is something that could be easily looked up.

20. Is it a Kenmore? Mine did the exact same thing.
Has something to do with the warping of the metal frame and thermodynamic cooling. :wtf:

That's what they told me anyway.

Check with the company to see if they will replace it for you for free. I got a new, improved door and it slid right into place.

21. It's a Roper/Whirlpool and it's being taken to
a recycle/used auto parts place. It'll be crushed, I suspect.

It's trash now and I'm moving, so it's not my problem.

23. Well, that's a relief at least.
When mine exploded, it was in the middle of the night and I was very, very pregnant. I heard this loud crash and then I could hear the bits of glass falling. I was absolutely convinced that an animal had become disoriented and crashed through the patio door and was walking on the glass.

It was so creepy, and a little scary.

28. I pulled the stove out from the wall to clean up the mess and
unplugged it for them to haul away in the morning and then I realized

It's my son's birthday today and I was going to bake a chocolate cake!! :(

I guess he'll have to wait until tomorrow. It's always something!

I'll bake it tomorrow and bring to the restaurant when I meet my sister.

We're going to celebrate her B-day, mine and my son's!

35. LOL! Hey, what's wrong with a few chips with your BLT?
Edited on Mon Sep-24-07 07:42 PM by Breeze54
That was a McDonalds bag with an Egg McMuffin sandwich in it, that got thrown away
and Texas Toast is not a staple but good with spaghetti, which was on the menu
until he went to buy bacon, lettuce and tomato's for sandwiches!

We had BLT's on whole grain toasted oatmeal bread instead!

He had just got off work and was starving and in a hurry to eat, so he could go to a party! :P

PS. You missed the Hallmark bag also!

All that stuff had just come out of shopping bags!

We don't eat that all day, every day, at all! ;)

This place is being sold and the owner is ripping apart all the units and redoing them.
(Bringing them up to 2007 code) We're in the middle of packing, hence the folding table.
Nice of the owner to make changes after we all move! :sarcasm:

But we had just gone grocery shopping and that bag of chips was all of 6 oz.!! LOL! :P

42. Interesting website here:
I have a 10 year old Roper too, so I went a googling....

From: http://www.appliance411.com/service/Myths_About_Appliances/Ranges/

Myth - The glass on the oven door exploded all by itself.

Truth - When an oven door glass shatters, there is always a cause. The cause could have occurred weeks or months ago and never even been noticed. For example if the oven door was struck, say with a broom handle when cleaning, a pot or pan while cooking or if the door was allowed to slam shut just once, that's all it can take. This initial blow could weaken the structure of the glass. Later, after repeated heating and coolings causing thermal expansion and contraction of the glass, it finally fails critically. It can also be caused by a flaw in the glass material but in such a case a failure will often occur within the first year warranty period. Luckily, it's safety glass and no large jagged shards remain to do additional harm.

43. Thanks! I read that earlier today and I'm sure the door got slammed
at least once, in seven years but it was just odd that it decided to self destruct that day!
After all this time living here and I know it was at least five yrs. old, when we moved in.
I'll bet the landlord bought it used. He's a real cheapskate. My neighbors are suing him and
want me to be a witness to his angry, abusive tirades. I'm not so sure now, that I should,
until I get out of here. I want my security back and he's offered to pay my moving expenses
and cut me loose from the lease, if I'll move before my lease is up in December.

I just didn't need this and he blames all his tenants when anything breaks! :grr:

I have to handle him with kid gloves and breath deep so that I don't punch him in the face!
