There are some pretty good ones out there; they are more expensive than, say, Franzia (which my mother drinks daily- yuck).

16. Screw tops are
becoming more popular. Wineries lose about 10% of their wine to bad corks, so the trend toward the stability offered by screw tops will just increase with time.

I really hate it when I've chilled a nice bottle of wine and then the cork falls apart and wine tastes like bad sherry. :puke: Stores will take back bad wine but it's still a hassle.

56. well not using cork will not help the cork forest habitat
if we want spain and portugal to preserve the cork forests, then we need to support them so people can make a living, these aren't "agricultural deserts" like a pine tree forest, they are the only remaining habitat for such rare species as the iberian lynx

we do need to support cork, maybe not every time, we all have budgets, but we should not turn away from cork altogether -- if we do that land will be turned into something else and the habitat lost

the current droughts are also harming the cork forests

35. I've noticed lately that a lot of people have trouble with the word Sauvignon.
Even on Food Network. I think I've may even have heard Emeril (who is no stranger to French, and a chef, and thus should know better) pronounce the first syllable with a short "a" instead of a long "o", and it's really grating. Tyler Florence does it as well.

Sacré bleu! I guess I've been conditioned to being brought up in a country where there's a sizeable French population.

Wine in a box: Upscale wineries trade cork for cardboard

As Americans stock up for family gatherings and parties, wineries in California and Australia are giving us a taste of how grape lovers in many other countries purchase their wine - in a box with a spigot.

The latest "bag in a box" wines, so-called because of the wine-filled bladder that comes inside a box, have come a long way. The new ones are from top producers, made with premium grape varieties and vintage-dated. They are not the sweet pink mystery wines that Americans are conditioned to seeing in a box.

In fact, they aren't even called box wines anymore. The preferred name is "cask" wines.

"Cask wines are the hottest trend in Australia and the U.K.," says Marc Jonna, national wine buyer for Whole Foods Market, with 145 stores in the United States and one in Canada.

7. Box wines are much improved of late and are perfectly acceptable

if you choose the good ones.

People who are stuck with the idea that you need a true cork or a bottle in order to have a good wine are stuck in the 90's in their wine knowledge.

41. As far as transmission of light goes, I'll bet the box helps, too.
Still, it would remind me of drinking out of a hot water bottle, and I'd rather pour wine out of a glass bottle, which I truly trust to be chemically inert as well as not déclassé.

Funny thing is, I don't have a major problem with artificial corks or screw-caps, as long as the container itself is made of glass.

My whole point, which was probably badly made (and I apologize for that), is that boxed wines now days shouldn't be dismissed out of hand.

It's a green/Earth friendly thing too:

White wine, that's OK.

Speaking of being Earth-friendly, a couple of months ago, the province of Ontario finally started recycling wine and liquor bottles, and I was glad to see that! A deposit has been added to the price of the wine or liquor, just as it had been with beer all along, and you get it back when you return the bottle to the LCBO.

Now if only we still did that for pop, I'd be over the moon.

but then I met some real wine professionals and learned to loosen up and really enjoy wine and be interested in it in a more open-minded and global way--Chilean, Spanish, German, etc.

I'm the same way about food too--interested in what is out there to sample and what different places have to offer.

or something like that........some of these can do in a pinch.

If you're looking for a special occasion, then don't go for boxed wines ( although, some boxed wines will do nicely )..

54. I guess I am a traditionalist...?
I like the ceremony of opening a good bottle. Inexpensive reds and whites can be had, although I prefer red. Properly aged. I usually buy cheap good reds that age well. I prefer bottle, you turn them occasionally for various reasons - my mom's reds (she makes her own) are really wonderful...I recently uncorked a 7 year old bosenberry...oh my god...it was like ambrosia and the buzz was slightly hallucinigenic...probably just me...

Cheap good wines aged properly are better suited to bottles. Boxes are meant for wines that are to be drunk at earliest opportunity.

To note: after reading this thread, I will try a wine bag once I get some people together that are up for the task...or cask, as may be...;-)

Great OP HypnoToad...

No Fear...
