what dietary supplements do you take , and why?
I take a multi vitamin

1000 IU D--because I am female and over 65

1,500 calcium (same reason)

1000 vit C-- because I have for years

20mg lutein --for eye health

1000 mcg biotin--for hair nails and skin

glucosomine and condroitin for achy bones (it works)

and it does seem to help.

I eat salmon and other fatty fish at lest twice a week , and you are right about fish oil!

I put ground flax seed in cereal , smoothies , etc. Maybe that is what is helping, huh?

Edited on Sat Sep-22-07 02:50 PM by supernova
MultiVitamin (Centrum clone from Costco)

400 mcg Vitamin E (rec of Dr Oz, though I think I'm taking less than he recommends)

1000 Calcium (prevent osteoporosis. As a small white woman, I'm really susceptible)

Holy Basil (supposed to support thyroid function)

2g Fish Oil (on the recommendation of Dr Oz)

900 mg St John's Wort Though I don't know if it's really working. I might need to be evaluated for something stronger.

Cinnamon dashed in my coffee. (to regulate blood sugars)

6. Holy Basil for thyroid function?
I think I will try that.

I was taking vit E , but recent reports are saying it doesn't help heart function, so I am kind of on the fence about that one.

do you add the cinnamon to your coffee while brewing, or after? Did I read somewhere that cinnamon raises blood pressure? Mine is ok , so I guess it wouldn't matter in my case.

25. 1500mg, but I take it in liquid form.
I either mix it into a smoothie or pour it into my coffee (it adds no real discernible flavor--it uses glycerin as a carrier liquid). It's really hard to find as a liquid--I order mine from puritan.com.

14. My morning menu:
A multi formulated for women of a certain age
Vitamin D
A calcium-magnesium-zinc combo
Balanced B vitamins

I added the latter two after reading an article in one of the science magazines about the effect of minerals and B vitamins on emotional stability.

I have a tendency toward depression, and while the vitamins don't cure me, I notice a definite lethargy and gloominess by midday when I haven't taken them.

29. Hi, Jitterbug
I take a good multivitamin/mineral
Fish oil
Magnesuium with calcium - mgnesium is good for my nerves.
500 mg. vitamin C
Vitamin D - 1000
Astragalus root herb for immune system boosting and it cured me of recurring bronchitis several years ago. Got that advice from Dr. Weil's site so I'm grateful!

Since my Mom had macular degeneration my eye doctor advises me to eat lots of purple fruits and veggies, lots of greens, and to eat fatty fish several times a week. She advised only wild salmon though, as their more natural foraging makes for high quality omega oils.(And no anti-biotics and dyes in their food either).

32. Plant sterols
My cholesterol dropped from 254 to 187. Dr. thinks it was because of the plant sterols. I try to remember to take a time release Niacin since that is supposed to raise the good cholesterol. We'll see.

I take Emergen-C which is 1000mg of C with a bunch of B vitamins.

That's about all I can remember to take.

39. I get this stuff
called Cholest-Off at Costco. It's made by Nature-Made. There is also an Emergen-C called Heart Health that has plant sterols in it.

I also eat oatmeal every morning. That's supposed to be good.

This does not work as fast as the prescription drugs. It took a few months to bring down the numbers. I also gave up cheese. I love cheese.
I'm sure exercise helped too. I went back to aerobics class.

35. i quit w. the calcium
Edited on Sat Sep-22-07 08:42 PM by pitohui
it didn't work for my mom and my ob/gyn said it probably isn't really absorbed (even the more absorbable kind isn't much really) -- this may be a function of our genetics, i don't know

instead i try to get 20 minutes of sun every day (natural source of vitamin D) and i've greatly increased my consumption of whole fat dairy and various deep greens -- my mom is also lactose intolerant so this wasn't an option for her

so far so good, my bone density scans are okay for now anyway, fingers crossed

i'm not saying give up your calcium supplements but if you are concerned about absorption it may be worth looking into getting more of the vit D/calcium thru natural means because the body might use it better?

1000 of C every couple of days, especially in the winter because we run out of fresh stuff around here and it's 20 miles to the store - can't just run out for some fruit.

thinking of starting CoQ10 but it was a little pricey. I respect Andrew Weils' advice and that was one to take.

...published by the editors of "Alternative Medicine" and found an article written by a cardiologist who is also a certified nutrition and anti-aging specialist in Connecticut. He recommends something called the Awesome Foursome:

magnesium
CoQ10
L-carnitine
D-ribose

He says this mixture has shown miraculous cardiac improvement, even in people with heart failure or diastolic dysfunction. His name is Stephen T. Sinatra, MD, FACC.

Very interesting.

58. I've dropped my daily antacids.
I was reading a few weeks ago about fatigue and PPIs and other antacids. I had realized that after taking that extra-strength Pepcid in the mornings I often would just want to go to sleep -- a deep need to sleep. The mechanics have something to do with antacids interfering with K vitamins absorption.

So I stopped the regular antacid. I try to regulate heartburn now with smaller more frequent meals and just an occasional regular pepcid or a chewable rolaid.

The increase in energy was astounding. No more of those spells of unexplained fatigue.

Give it a try, if you have the same kind of trouble.
