but the lyrics are German or English, depending on who's singing it.

Edit: Apparently the Latin of the original prayer is also sometimes set to Schubert's melody.

13. I sang the Gounod version at a few weddings - there are two famous versions
both in Latin. One by Charles Gounod set "on top" of the first prelude of Bach's Well Tempered Clavier and one by Schubert which really isn't an Ave Maria and is a German Translation of a poem by Sir Walter Scott but has had the Latin prayer sort of thrown onto it.

Latin and Italian are really great languages for singing - really......
