Polyglots are soooooo cool!
I know a smattering of French....a micro-smattering. About ten words in Russian. And can make my way through a Spanish-speaking community with the help of tequila and sign language. I am struggling to improve my Spanish with the goal of fluency. Oh how I wish I could just go immerse for about 2-3 years in a Spanish speaking community!

Are you fluent in two or more languages? If so, which ones?

1. My cousins in Luxembourg put my measly 5 years of French to shame...
Of two of my generation (baby boomers) they both speak Luxembourgisch, French, German and English -- all remarkably well. Additionally, one is fluent in Italian and the other fluent in Spanish.

Luxembourgisch is a sort of bastard German.

And I speak French with a Luxembourgisch accent, thanks to them. :D

2. My Spanish exchange student this summer was fluent in...
Spanish, Basque, French and....well, getting there in English. Makes me feel like such a provincial rube.

6. English is becoming the common language....
and, sadly, we Americans tend to be rather isolated here with our language because it's such a big country.

17. Luxembourg is such a cool country
I used to go once a month to Lux City when I lived in Germany. I only lived 45 minutes away.

3. Fluent in Spanish and English,
Pretty good with French, can read and understand spoken Portuguese, able to politely order breakfast in Hebrew, Arabic, Greek and Turkish. Can cuss in Arabic.

Wow - I hadn't really thought about it, but I can get by pretty well....

9. He would have loved chatting with you
My BIL knows German -- he was going to chat with Granny, and forgot... he chatted with my cousin's German husband, though.

11. Undergrad degree in French--but I never use it anymore
except in occasional conversations with my dad who speaks it. My undergrad school required that language majors take a second language. Mine was Spanish, but I was never really interested, just meeting the requirement, so didn't work hard at it. Then I got a job in a largely Puerto Rican neighborhood in Boston during seminary and my Spanish improved considerably. In fact, I helped a pharmacist and a Spanish-speaking couple deal with one another at Walgreen's the other day. The Spanish-speaking folks actually thought I spoke more Spanish than I do, and I had to really work to keep up!

But it's questionable as to whether I'm really fluent in either of these anymore. And don't get me started on Greek or Hebrew!!

16. I recently read a novel in French.
All the talk about Steve Fossett going missing made me think of St. Exupery, so I re-read _Vol de Nuit_. What a great book! Also, my knowledge of French lit has been helpful in reading Girard.

But, no, mostly I never use it.

Turkish and Armenian?! Cool!

12. Uh, English.
:D

And I can read Latin and am fairly passable with getting the gist of any written Romance language. But don't speak anything but English to me; I'm terrible with understanding spoken language. :D

I'm very excited. I've always wanted to learn it, and now, finally, I am. After that, I want to learn French.
