Word usage: "Hate" vs "Hatred"
Having sorta majored in English, loving to write, and reading as much as I do, I'm rather chagrined that I don't know the answer to this question.

What is the difference between the words "HATE" and "HATRED?"

I've always felt that "HATE" is a verb and "HATRED" a noun. Am I wrong?

The reason I ask is that I'm irked if I hear the word "HATE" used where I think "HATRED" would be better used.

Anyone?

1. Then there's the expression "hate speech"
In that case, is "hate" an adjective?

3. Hadn't thought of it, but probably should be "hateful speach"
shouldn't it?

But then, that's the evolution of language, so I'm hapy to go with the term hate speach. Just don't hate me for it. :-)

(though I really dislike the idea of there being "hate speach" or "hate crimes" - just silliness to me to make a differentiation between one crime and one based on "hate").

2. test your theory with two compound nouns.

1. hate-crime
2. hatred-crime

Nope, I think we have to disagree with your assertion.

Hate stands quite well as a common noun, or as a regular transitive verb.

Let's try a simpler sentence with your preference--

They offered hate as their principle.
They offered hatred as their principle.

The latter sounds a bit more rhetorical and a tiny bit elevated.
Really, both feel quite similar and equally correct to me.
I don't say this pejoratively, but I think this is an idiosyncratic reaction on your part.

There is a certain literary precident with the term 'thought-crime' as well. "Thinking-Crime" does not strike me as elegant. Though both sets of usages are correct, some are more fit to specific lexicons than others.

4. maybe idiosyncratic
I'm the most idiosyncish person I know. ;)

Thanks for your perspective.

I think of "hate is not a family value" and "hatred is not a family value" -- they both work....

I'm just curious about what folks have to say. I hope others will weigh in.
