I'm math illiterate, can someone good with numbers give me an assist?
I get paid by productivity. I asked for a raise and they offered to change the formula for calculating my pay -- I was paid 9 cents for every 65 typed characters and they offered to make it 9 cents for every 60 characters. I still felt that it wasn't much of an increase so now they are offering 10 cents for every 65 characters instead of 9 cents. Now, I'm pretty flippin' awful at math but it seems to me that this amounts to almost exactly the same thing but I don't know how to do the actual math. help? please?

2. Here's what I got
9 cents / 65 characters = 0.13846 cents per character
9 cents / 60 characters = 0.15 cents per character
10 cents / 65 characters = 0.1538 cents per character

So the last offer looks like the best. But you're right, it's close.

3. That's a nice raise either way, but the second is better (8.3% vs. 11.1%)
Edited on Mon Sep-17-07 08:38 AM by Rabrrrrrr
9 cents per 65 words =

9 cents for 65 words = 0.138461538 cents per word
9 cents for 60 words = 0.15 cents per word (an 8.3% raise)
10 cents for 65 words = 0.153846154 cents per word (an 11.1% raise)

6. it's not actually a raise :( it's "how much less of a pay cut"
it's complicated sort of but we've got a change in software and previously it was 45 = 9 cents so 65 = 10 cents is actually a pay cut but evidently slightly less so than 60 = 9 cents. Needless to say, I spent my weekend polishing my resume.

4. Maybe this will help
Edited on Mon Sep-17-07 08:56 AM by Ptah
for 9 cents per 65 words - 2000 characters = $2.77
for 9 cents per 60 words - 2000 characters = $3.00
for 10 cents per 65 words - 2000 characters = $3.08

looks like 10 cents per 65 characters is the best for you.

edit to add:

for 9 cents per 49 words - 2000 characters = $4.00

5. How many words per hour can you type?
Edited on Mon Sep-17-07 08:55 AM by electron_blue
For example, suppose you type 65 words/minute, then you would be effectively paid 65words/min*60min/hour*.09$/65words=$5.4/hour

If you now get a raise, but still type 65 words/minute, then your new pay would be 65 words/min*60min/hr*.09$/60words=$5.85/hour

This is about an 8% increase (assuming you produce 65 words/minute) The 10 cents/65 words is an even better deal at $6/hr or 11.1% raise. Take the $.10/65 words,

Does this help?

How much of a raise were you hoping for or expecting?

eta: yikes on the paycut. I just read your reply. Good luck with your job hunt.

9. I saw what you had -
I'm not sure I'm following, though.

Assuming she types 65 wpm (which is probably slow these days! lol) & the average word length is 6 characters.

So WPM * AWL = total CPM

So I'm thinking: (CPM/65 characters) * $Rate * 60 minutes = total.

But my total per hour is WAY different from yours. So I'm trying to figure out where I went wrong.:(

Granted, math isn't my strong suit.

11. Change jobs
you get paid per typing?

Change jobs. Trust me if you are at the least bit functional and presentable ( I would assume you are) they will fall down trying to get you in the door.

12. here is an easy way to look at it
Suppose you provided 3900 characters.

At .09 per 60 - that would be $5.85.

at .10 per 65, it would be $6.00

So - the dime per 65 is better by 2 1/2%
