2. In answer to you first question,

I think I look kind of goofy ... but my wife doesn't agree. :)

as to the second, it it is a fungus in the wood. Wood will spalt both while it is stil standing and after it has been cut if in the presence of the fungus (many kinds) and aslong as there is moisture. I turned this on a lathe and just finished it last night. It has some significant flaws unfortunately, but I haven't turned anything in about 7 years. It is good to get back on the lathe ... very therapeutic.
