Poll question: Do You Make Up Your Bed Every Day?
Why? Or why not?

I do... but for one reason only: It's nicer to crawl into at bedtime... not because I'm afraid House Beautiful might pop in to take pictures of my bedroom.

3. No. I never make up my bed.
I'll be in it each night. Why go through the bother of making it every day?

or washing your clothes or cleaning the bathtub. After all... you're just going to get them dirty again, eh?

12. It's A Habit I Developed When I Was Single...
... that unexpected romantic encounter could happen at any time (I had convinced myself, despite evidence to the contrary) so I wanted my love nest to be ready at a moment's notice.

It didn't help.

14. I took a different view.
I thought that if I didn't make my bed and invited a gentleman for the evening, the unmade bed would be a sign that I was really "wild". That didn't help, either.

21. Only on weekends
Just in case I get "lucky". During the week I like to drink coffee too much before I go to work and read DU. Doesn't leave me any time to make the bed. But I do at least pull up the covers.

25. Right, as in the Witches of Eastwick
one of my favorite lines is when Nicholson (the Devil) is trying to seduce Michelle Pfeiffer and she says she's got to dust and wash the dishes, she's too busy and that's exactly what he says to her.

I just kinda toss the covers back on the bed, and smooth them out.
I just don't want my stuff sitting on the floor all crumpled up. But I don't "make the bed" unless I am expecting company, and I almost never do.

9. Sounds like my old apt.
I had the best studio apartment in SF. It was the only place I had on my own when I lived there. I could clean it so quick and had my own washer and dryer!

Plus I had a revolving door. (this was back during my single, trampy days)

8. It's a lot easier to make the bed . . .
. . . than to listen to my wife's epic rants about it not being made. She's merciless.

16. It's a lot easier to make the bed . . .
right after you get up, while it's still warm.
Once it gets cold it's a lot stiffer and harder to make up.
I think I read this in Heloise.

11. I actually made my bed last night...
but that was the first time in about 3 weeks. If I didn't toss and turn so much I probably WOULD make it more often, but it's just too messy to deal with when I am running late every morning!

13. My mother taught me when I was a little girl . . .
. . . to make the bed every day. Tuck in the sheet and blankets. Pull up the bedspread (which I had left neatly folded at the foot the night before) and smooth out all the wrinkles. Turn the bedspread down 18 inches from the top. Set my pillow on it and bring the folded part back up over the pillow. Get the crease between the pillow and the bed nice and crisp, and make sure that the spread fell smoothly away from the pillow on both sides.

After years of doing all that, why would I ever want to make a bed again for the rest of my life???

18. No. Too regimented. But I'm not a slob!
In fact, I'm very neat and clean. But I *hate* making up the bed -- all that pulling and tugging of covers, and it still looks like hell when I have a go at it.

My wife usually makes the bed, and I'll do some other chore, like scoop the cats' litterbox or wash dishes.

19. I don't like the way the room looks if the bed is trashed
and, since it's a comforter, it's easy enough to just tug it straight when I get up and retrieve the pillows my husband's winged at the cats during the night. Besides, it keeps the sheets clean longer if you keep the bed neatly made.

29. Yes everymorning....
Just like Allen, I love to climb into a nicely made bed at bedtime. Trying to sleep in an unmade bed also happens to be a pet peeve of mine. IE If the bed during the evening becomes very unkempt I will actually get up and quickly remake.

30. Hell no, but sorta half-yes I guess
.
.

I have this silly idea that after laying in there, tossing , turning, perspiring, passing air, whatever, for 6 - 8 hours that it might be a good idea to "air-out" the damm thing -

So I fold it down and to one side, so it's sorta made, but not the tuck the sheets/blankets under/over the pillows without a crease like momma taught me !

BUT

- here's how to get that "offspring" to make their bed when all else fails

Take a picture and threaten to put it on the web !

.
.

oops !

Edited on Wed Jan-28-04 04:38 PM by SOteric
But usually, the default is to make the bed. Because like you, I enjoy going to bed in tidy sheets. It's more inviting.

If I'm expecting company, - even my oldest and dearest friends, the first two things I do are make the bed and clean the bathroom.
