6. I always thought that Borderline Personality Disorder was something they made up...
...to make it look like strong willed women were mentally impaired since they didn't go along with social norms.
It's interesting to see it's real.

I was just saying that I was wrong basically. I hope you know that I wasn't trying to negate anything you said. I just saw Girl Interrupted and was like, WHAT THE FUCK!?

find an effective treatment. I hope this new course of therapy helps.

10. Best of luck to you
My husband is a psychiatrist. He's been in research, but started at the VA this week and will be seeing lots of inpatients. Psychiatric disorders are SO misunderstood and stigmatized. Good for you to not only get treatment, but to tell us about it.

21. a thought
Edited on Fri Sep-07-07 11:28 AM by pitohui
i think when you learn more about it you will wish that you had not told people you had been diagnosed w. BPD

most people are not thinking girl interrupted, they are thinking self-involved sociopath or drama queen, i don't think you are such a one, and i don't know or want to know the basis of this dx, but i hope it is wrong obviously, it just doesn't feel right

if i were you, i would try to get this thread removed

even if it is correct, it is not something you want other people to know about you, there is difference between telling strangers you have a panic disorder (which is harmless to them) and BPD (which suggests if they got closer you could become a problem to them)

you are making yourself too vulnerable here in my opinion, forgive me for maybe stepping in where i shouldn't, i see that you hope to remove the stigma, unfortunately i think all you have done is label yourself, there is little chance that this particular illness would not cause others to have some negative feelings of caution

23. Perhaps thats because so many people are ill-informed
Screw that - I'm bipolar and I don't care who knows it. I try to educate the people I meet about the disorder because its so misunderstood that people think "you could become a problem to them."

I'm not going to hide the fact that I'm bipolar just to make other people feel more comfortable (and blissfully ignorant). If they have a problem with that, it's THEIR problem, not mine.

25. Right you are
Forgot that was in there. Even so, I hate the stigmatising of any kind of mental illness by hiding it. I rather prefer being upfront and educating about it.

Of course, that's me and the OP is free to make whatever choice she wants to.

26. I understand what you are saying
and I thank you for your concern....however I think I am a good person, and hope that others here agree with me...knowing about my illness should not change their opinion of me, because it is part of who I am.....if it does change their opinion of me, then they buy into the stigma and maybe I shouldn't have them in my life.

Did I make myself vulnerable, perhaps, but I am an open person who is willing to risk a little in order to change things for the better.

22. Finding out what the problem is I find is half the battle.
Took them 32 years to diagnose me with bipolar disorder. Thank goodness for therapy & treatment. If it weren't for that I don't think I would have been here much longer.

Glad to hear you have a diagnosis and all goes well with your treatment.

Mark.

34. The brain is a physical thing...
When the heart malfunctions, people can have heart attacks. When someone has diabetes, their blood sugar rises to a point that becomes damaging to their organs.

When the brain malfunctions, people can exhibit emotional symptoms.

Until every person walking this earth understands this concept, there will always unfortunately be a stigma associated with mental illness.

I wish you the best of luck in coping with your illnesses, and I am sure you will manage quite well.

Take good care of yourself.

36. Good Luck
My ex was Borderline. That will probably be the most difficult thing to deal with.
Requires a very good shrink with lots of experience dealing with it. Not much meds can do about it.
The best of luck to you. It's just a diagnosis, though. It doesn't define you.

I have family who suffer from the same things, they are home bodies and rarely let themsevles open up to anything. webspace has very few enclosures, contribute much and listen a lot, but don't take un-authoritative warnings like they're important. ;-)
