Great Guitar Songs (Besides Layla and Sweet Home Alabama)
Edited on Thu Aug-30-07 01:51 PM by BurtWorm
Here are the top five great guitar songs I have been listening to lately (as opposed to all time great guitar tunes, which some of these might actually be):

Kingdom of Love, The Soft Boys
Sideshow by the Seashore, Luna
Driveway to Driveway, Superchunk
See No Evil, Television
California (All the Way), Luna

Others?

PS: Kingdom of Love is the first song in this set:

80. "Voodoo Chile/Slight Return" especially
and it's not often that a cover version of a song turns out to be light years ahead of the original, but Jimi OWNS "All Along the Watchtower.
(no offense to fans of Dylan's original version -- it's a very fine redition of a great song.)
But jimi just owns that damn thing.

:loveya: I love how David Gilmour can put so much emotion into a guitar solo...the first time I heard it, I felt like I was flying, and the feeling hasn't diminished much over time. :loveya: Amazing stuff, IMO.

Edit: D'oh! :banghead: I got so distracted by the music that I replied to the wrong post...

32. Sultans of Swing. Tasty!
All Along the Watchtower has that brilliant solo, no matter how many times it took to put it in.

Since this is not about solo's I'd prefer Foxy Lady. Heaviest guitar I've ever heard. That CLANG! is just awesome. Bang your head to that, and you're dead!

20. Ramblin' Man, the Allman Brothers
Lenny, Stevie Ray Vaughan--although there are probably a dozen SRV tunes that could be listed, too. His cover of Little Wing, for one, which I maintain is better than Hendrix's original.

Classical Gas, Mason Williams, naturally.

Crossroads, performed by Clapton

Back In Black, AC/DC. Could probably throw in Rock n Roll (Ain't Noise Pollution) and Shook Me All Night Long

Lola, the live version by the Kinks

Dead, My Chemical Romance

Aguas de Marco, Jobim

Say It Ain't So, Weezer

Long Hot Summer Night, Hendrix

Try, John Mayer Trio

Girlfriend, Matthew Sweet

Higher Ground, Red Hot Chili Peppers

...for starters.

I know there are more bands with good guitar that I have CDs of, or have heard, but I can't think of them right off hand. Oh, wait, I love the guitar that starts at around 4:05 in Modest Mouse's "Trailer Trash." And Aliens' "Setting Sun," which is on their MySpace, which I think is myspace.com/aliens, but if it's not just go there and do a search for them, or just go to my MySpace (http://myspace.com/mysticalchicken) and it's on my profile.

58. 5
Little Johnny Jewel"- Television (Live, from "The Blow-Up" Cassette)
Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd's best guitar playing on record/tape; it's guitar nirvana...

"I Heard Her Call My Name"- The Velvet Underground
Lou Reed's atonal, Ornette Coleman freakout on the breaks of this track from "White Light/White Heat" shreds speakers; when you turn it up, it doesn't get louder, it gets thicker...

"Maggot Brain"- Funkedelic
Eddie Hazel was better than Hendrix, and I'll say that to my dying day...

"We're An American Band"- Yo La Tengo
Ira has done some very emotional, expressive guitar solos, but this one is my favorite...

"The Days Of Wine And Roses"- The Dream Syndicate
Steve Wynn's slashing E chords at the beginning raises the hair on the back of my head everytime, and when Karl Precoda's 57 varieties of guitar feedback screech follow, it always, always puts me into a wonderful place...

Seemed appropriate to queue up with the Larry Craig stuff and all. Love the Soft Boys. They have a similar guitar sound to Television on alot of songs. The Rat's Prayer is a good one like that.

Good stuff on that Penthouse album too by Luna. 23 Minutes in Brussels is another good one for guitar.
