COOL WEBSITE: calculates how walkable your neighborhood is
http://walkscore.com/

It comes up with a score based on which kinds of businesses and necessary services are nearby.

My address got 95 out of 100, but I could have guessed that since it's why I choose to live here.

We live in a small town, but in a pretty good location. My location lost points because we do not have a bookstore, coffee shop, or movie theater in town.

There's nothing you can walk 'to'.
But it's imminently 'walkable' in the exercise sense.

All the distances are direct, and not the real walking distances over winding suburban streets that seem determined not to get anywhere, which are close to double.

36. Lots of people love to visit here.
They filmed Northern Exposure here, years ago.

It is beautiful, and both of those pictures are but a short drive from my house. Well, short until you get to the forest service road anyway. Then you spend a great deal of time winding your way up.

17. 18 here, but what's weird is it is walkable to services.
Edited on Sun Aug-26-07 07:22 PM by Gormy Cuss
I think their algorithm assumes a tolerance less than a mile as walkable. Most of the services near here are more like 1.5 miles and it is walkable thanks to sidewalks, wide shoulders on local roads, and pedestrian trails.

on edit: yep. I choose an address four blocks closer to services and it has a walkability rating of 60.

My walk score is zero. Nothing for miles around, which is why I love where I live. I don't walk to stores, but I walk to the creek, through the woods, around the pasture. I guess walkscore.com doesn't like rural settings.

39. Only 58/100? Apparently this doesn't quite work right.
I live right near campus. I walk there every school day.

Under "libraries" it lists our town library, even though a larger one is right on campus.

Under "fitness" it neglects to list the rec center, again on campus.

It also doesn't list the campus bookstore, music store, or any campus restaurants or grocers. Yet the map displays all of these locations.

Ironically, under "parks" it lists a tiny spot of grass on campus that no one uses, while neglecting to mention the large park right down the street.

Under "coffee shops", it doesn't list the coffee shop two blocks down the street, nor the one in the dorms on campus, instead listing one half a mile away.

I'd say my neighborhood's real walk score is at least in the 70s or 80s.

47. Uses crappy data
The hardware store that it lists as being less than a mile away is some contractors home address. One nearby grocery store is acually an investement company, one bar is actually the Bar-T ranch childrens day camp.
So the crappy 25 that I get is padded and should probably be lower.

...and it only scored that high (?) because of the alleged presence of a brewery nearby -- which, based on the map, either was listed under the wrong address or is located in the basement of someone's home.

Nearest theatre is 8.1 miles away. And don't bother walking, because it's a drive-in. :eyes:

The irony is that, when we were looking for houses, we checked to make sure that we could avoid unnecessary driving by picking a place with a bus stop (with regular runs to Seattle) within walking distance. Then, a couple of years after we moved in, Metro announced a series of "service improvements" that, while increasing bus routes to the eco-yuppified suburbs of the east side, simply closed down service to our stop altogether. Now, the nearest bus stop with connections to Seattle is almost two miles away, and only features a handful of buses per day. Anything more than that is a five mile walk along a state highway with 50 M.P.H. traffic and no sidewalks.

I live on Staten Island. It's counting businesses in NJ as part of my neighborhood. It's an hour drive down the island, over a bridge and back up to get to those places. They're definitely not in my neighborhood and not walking distance. :P

we get killed on the park, hardware and the movie theatre. And the grocery/pharmacy sells a fair amount of hardware items.

Then again, the bookstore listed sells only titles in Japanese (well, maybe Korean, but none in English, at any rate). They could have counted one of the stalls in front of the grocery as a "coffee shop". And the "school"? It's one of those exam prep centers! :eyes:
