It really hurts my feelings. And he thinks it is the greatest toy ever. So proud of it. He even tried to bring it in the house. x(

1. Because he's a dog.
My husky caught a young deer once, luckily she didn't kill it.

The dogs occasionally catch what must be really stupid and slow birds. Those are just feather explosions in the backyard.

3. Mine has killed birds, possums, poor cats, squirrels, lizards. Anything
he can catch. He doesn't tear them to shreds. He plays with them like he does his toys. It is sad for the other little animals.

5. wait until he catchs a skunk.
That was a fun week, or when one of my dogs decided to play with a water moccosin. At least squirrels are relatively harmless.

6. Maybe the skunk would teach him a thing or two.
We had a 6 foot moccasin in the back yard one time. Apparently, he knew better than to go near it. He ran the other way!!

13. I don't think the smell really bothered her after the first day.
Of course, this is the same dog that will roll around on dead fish.

At least they keep things interesting.

7. Or a porcupine
Sadly, some of them never learn. I had one dog who got sprayed by skunks I don't know how many times. And another who was a porcupine magnet. :eyes:

9. I haven't seen any porcupines in these parts. Not sure if they
are around here. That wouldn't be good! Another $400 vet bill!! x(

26. I had a dog that killed a mother possum and her little babies.
It was not a pretty sight to see.

I now feed the possums to make up for it.

A dog is just being a dog.

2. Because they run
Don't you have a Boxer? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Yeah, the little devil's run. Which makes them fun to chase. And what's the point of a chase? Oooo! Caught one! :(

8. Dogs are hunters
and squirrels are often annoying to even the disinclined hunter. Maybe the dog was trying to sleep.

My gentle boy just hates one type of bird. The rest of the birds are fine and know they can walk next to him and pick seeds/bugs off the ground. The birds he hates make a lot of unpleasant noise AND they steal kibble from the poor neighbor dogs who never get to go inside or for walks/rides. Those abusive, thieving birds really piss my dog off. He really feels sorry for the hounds next door and tries to cheer them up a lot.

My dog is a liberal ;)

22. My dog is just a natural sweetheart. He tries to 'get small' so as not to intimidate puppies & cats
Frets over and protects mice from Havocdad and the cat. Herds toads and frogs who get too far from the wet around the bushes in the garden, except for one old toad who he pals around with and tries to get into the house at last call for dogs to come in on summer nights.

Your dog is just doin what nature decreed.

My dog is very activist.

15. Yes, and ours throw pine cone cores.
...and I swear I feel little sprinkles from the tops of the pine trees even on clear sunny days. I don't even want to think about that. :eyes:

14. A really stupid rabbit has set up a home under the dog house.
Or maybe he/she is a very smart rabbit, I don't know. It has survived under there for over two years now. I occasionally see it scurry into its den with all five of my dogs in hot pursuit.

17. My parents have three dogs... tiny little things
You wouldn't think they'd be capable of things like that. And they aren't... at least not with squirrels. The squirrels are too fast for them.

However, the hapless chicken that somehow got into their yard wasn't so lucky. How a chicken got there, they never found out. They live in a relatively poultry-free area.

I of course, suggested that perhaps there was some fowl play involved.

19. What's even more bizarre... their back yard is entirely fenced in.
The middle of suburbia. No chickens around, except in the freezer and meat areas of their local stores.

20. They also tried to pick a fight with a possum that got into the yard
thankfully my parents managed to get them away before they started anything they wouldn't have been able to finish... odds are good that those dogs would have gotten a whoopin' and that possum would have come out unscathed.

But that's not as weird as the chicken thing, since possums tend to climb trees and fences and the like, and pop up when you least expect them. The same can not be said for chickens.

Although they do have at least one crazy neighbor... so the first half of your suggestion has some merit.

30. My dog killed my ex-mother-in-law's pet bunny
before she was my ex-mil. My then-fil said "Oh, let her off the leash. She's not hurting anything." So, I did. No sooner was she offleash than she ran across the yard, picked up the bunny, shook it a couple of times, and dropped it, dead as a doornail, at the mil's feet. And she hadn't liked me before that. Oops!
