County jails you've been to
Continuing on the theme - we have states and capitals. I've been to the Westmoreland lockup in NH, the Woodstock Correctional facility in Vt and the Greenfield county lockup in Mass.

Only to visit or bail out friends, though. :)

28. Ok, here's how we make money, see? All the people are in Church
every Sunday, see, lookin' for the Lord, see... and all the people in the jails keep finding the Lord, see...

SO... we need to bring the church people to jail, see.. then when they find Jesus, see ... they can bail themselves out, see... we make a lot of money, see... cuz bail is higher that tithing, see...

Yeahhhhh, *that's* the tickettt!

14. Monterey County, twice, to get someone out
San Benito County, as part of the citizens' police academy.

Read about that here: http://www.hollisterfreelance.com/special/contentview.asp?c=4961

Oh, and you might e-mail the editor and ask, "Why isn't the author's name on this series?" I'd wager that nobody who now works there even knows I wrote it.

15. 30 of the 34 institutions in the CA Department of Corrections
From 1994 thru 2000 I worked out of headquarters. I never made it to Chuckawalla and Ironwood in lovely Blythe, CSP-LA County in Lancaster or Chino. At a couple of them (Pelican Bay and Corcoran), I had to wear a stab jacket. That's such a wonderful feeling. Gosh, I miss it so.

IL jail when I was there accompanying a janitorial-supply salesman on a sales call.

I've been in the Buffalo Grove, IL lockup to get fingerprinted (for a teaching license), and in the Arlington Heights, IL lockup when I went on a field trip to the police station with Girl Scouts.

I've never been in a jail cell area when there have been prisoners present, though.

...not a county jail because we don't have those here, but a medium-security facility, Hiland Mountain Correctional Center back when it was mostly a sex offender treatment facility and not a women's prison. Have also visited Fairbanks Correctional Center to visit a client of a former lawyer boss of mine, and four others to visit my ex who couldn't seem to stay away, he loved it so much there ... HMCC, Palmer Medium and Minimum, Cook Inlet Pretrial Facility, Sixth Avenue Jail, and Seward Max. Fun times.

21. Whalley Avenue Jail, New Haven
which, in the early '80s, was the headquarters of -- I kid you not -- the World Prison Poetry Project. Our college literary magazine had a partnership going with them, so off I went to the Big House.

You know what? Their publication, "Broadsides", wasn't bad. Not bad at all.

Later I would spend a fair amount of time in the back of a Jefferson Parish, La., sheriff's unit. No, it's not what you think: down there, the officers get to use them like company cars, and this one guy was going with my friend and fellow activist, who would make him pick my carless self up and take me to clinic defense and such in the unit!

24. Tempe Municipal Court -- holding cells are in the basement
I was there to get my daughter out. She was caught with a fake ID in the college strip area. She was there to play volleyball in the national junior college national championships. I went to watch volleyball, not to get her out of the lockup. :banghead:

Kind of put a damper on my first trip out West.

33. I guess I can laugh about it, now
but when I was sitting outside the municipal building, in the shadows of Sun Devil Stadium, in the late November air, with no sweater or jacket on, from 2am until I got inside at 8am -- it wasn't all that fun.

31. I'm at the Santa Clara County Jail (San Jose) almost daily..
My husband works there as a nurse and we have lunch together about 3-4 days a week (not at the jail of course, but I pick him up from there). I've never been inside though.

I've also been to a federal prison in Arizona and visited someone at West Valley Detention Center (San Bernardino County Jail). Oh..and Heman Stark Correctional Facility also (California Youth Authority).
