My work e-mail has been down for six days
Was supposed to be restored early this morning but 'they're still working on it.' This is fast becoming a completely intolerable situation. How can a Division I university have such a flawed system that it takes six days to repair? That's unacceptable.

1. That's insane.
Well, if something doesn't get done, you certainly have a handy excuse.

2. It's gotten so bad that my boss and I spent ten minutes commenting on the new kitchen stuff
That the office manager went to buy this morning. I've never had so much time to look at and discuss the merits of a new black dish drainer and some shelf paper.

4. It shouldn't take that long
Maybe they need to dip into the budget and get an outside consultant...sounds like they might be fumbling for a solution.

5. That's absolutely crazy!
How can any business (much less a university) survive without e-mail? Unbelievable that they let it go on so long!

6. Update: Now they don't know how long it'll be or if it'll even be today
After telling us it would be up early this morning. Then 9a, then 10a, then 11a, then noon..... It's beyond intolerable now.

12. I don't blame IT
They have been working night and day to fix the problem which I believe is a corrupted disk that holds all the e-mail files for roughly 30,000 users and it all has to be moved to a new disk without losing anything.

I blame the administration for not taking bids for this and going with this system because it was tossed in as a freebie with the rest of package they bought (admissions, financial, etc.) without any logical backup plans.

9. 6 days is bad.
1 day, 2, maybe 3. But 6?

Wait until web-based apps become the norm...

11. Web-based apps, servers, and databases can still fail
and so can networks and connections to the Internet.

14. I assume the core infrastructure of copy machines is still intact.
The loss of copy capabilities as a backup activity to wasting time on the web is more than a university can tolerate.
